Overview

There are machines that mark their era, and others that, patiently, hone their edge year after year. The Yamaha YZF-R1 2014 belongs to the latter category, a refined warrior rather than a noisy revolutionary. While competitors, with the BMW S 1000 RR or the Kawasaki ZX-10R, were throwing horsepower around, Yamaha chose the path of sophistication. Its secret weapon remains this crossplane engine, an inline four-cylinder that beats with the soul of a V4. The torque is smooth, voracious, and the sound that comes from the exhaust is a deep rumble that is unique to it. With 182 horsepower at 12,500 rpm, we are far from the 200 horses announced by others. Is that a problem? On the track, facing an Aprilia RSV4, you can feel the difference on exit from fast corners. But on the open road, this power remains overwhelming, and above all, it is extraordinarily usable thanks to its progressive delivery. That is the whole philosophy of this R1: it does not seek brute force, but a controlled sensation.

Yamaha YZF-R1 1000

Justly, to channel this energy, Yamaha finally equipped the beast with a serious traction control system in 2012. A six-level system, coupled with three engine maps, which transforms this projectile into a more precise tool. The rider can thus adjust the character of the motorcycle, from an aggressive assailant to a civilized tourer, even if with an 18-liter tank, long rides are planned more with the head than with the heart. The braking, ensured by radial six-piston calipers clamping 310 mm discs, is of exemplary efficiency and feel. The Deltabox frame and the 43 mm inverted fork offer handling of surgical precision, although its weight of 206 kg when full stands guard against the lighter Italians.

Visually, the R1 of this generation cultivates a relative anonymity. Only initiates will notice the LED lights, the small redesigned fork head and the hexagonal exhaust tips. It remains this silhouette that is both aggressive and mysterious, a beauty that does not flaunt itself. It is a sportbike for purists, for those who believe more in the alchemy of an engine than in a specification sheet. Its new price at the time, around 14,000 euros, placed it in the big leagues, a significant investment for technology that, it must be said, was beginning to date against the electronic avalanche of the competition.

Yamaha YZF-R1 1000

So, who is this R1 for? Certainly not a beginner, who would crush them without remorse. It is the mount of the demanding track rider who seeks feeling above all, or the sporty tourer fond of mechanical character. It will not be the fastest in a straight line, but it offers a dialogue, a connection that few of its rivals can match. Today, on the used market, it represents a nice deal for a rider who wants to taste a legend without breaking the bank. Looking for the price of a Yamaha YZF-R1 1000 from 2016 in France often leads you to more technologically advanced models. But for those seeking the pure essence of a hypersportive with a unique character, this 2014 crossplane R1 remains a terribly seductive option, a lesson in mechanics that still commands respect.
