Overview
Who says goodbyes have to be subtle? In 2011, Kawasaki chose to send the previous generation of ZX-10R out on its feet with a Performance Edition that resembles a kick in the anthill of hypersportives. It's not a technical revolution, but rather war paint for those who found the base already too tame. The idea is simple: to give a supplement of soul and style to a beast that, let's remember, already delivered 193 horsepower at 12,500 rpm, enough to make the stopwatch and rear tire shiver.

The kit boils down to parts that speak directly to the rider. The tall windscreen isn't there for show; it really holds the helmet in relative silence when you dare to brush 186 mph. The Akrapovic carbon exhaust is the centerpiece. It doesn't just growl with that raspy voice that was lacking in the original; it releases five extra horsepower and lightens the beast by a few superfluous kilos. At a standstill, it's the aggressive rear hugger and the seat cowl that transform the look, erasing any trace of banality. These tuning turn signals, finally, are an admission: the original ones were hideous.
Is it, however, a track machine? No. The chassis, the 43 mm inverted fork, and the monoshock remain those of the series model, perfectly capable but not recalibrated for the war of the chronos. This ZX-10R Performance is a machine for the pure enthusiast, the one who mainly rides on the road and for whom character and aesthetics count as much as the technical specifications. At nearly 15,000 euros, it cost a small fortune more than the standard version, a price justified only by the emotion.
Faced with a BMW S 1000 RR already overpowered and electronically advanced, or an Aprilia RSV4 with a screaming V4, the Kawasaki played a different card: that of raw engagement and personality. It was aimed at the rider who prefers a direct mechanical connection, a four-cylinder engine that explodes in the high revs, and the feeling of riding a unique motorcycle. Its flaw? Perhaps to be only a cosmetic upgrade when the competition was evolving at high speed. But its ultimate quality is to have offered a final heroic track lap to a beloved platform, with the panache and the noise that go with it. A farewell fanfare, simply.
