Overview
Imagine a S 1000 RR that decided to go on vacation with a travel bag on its back. That’s roughly the image conveyed by the BMW S 1000 XR when you first encounter it on a national road. This machine doesn't fit into any neat category, and that’s precisely what makes it as fascinating as it is divisive.

For 2025, the 999 cc inline four-cylinder engine produces 170 horsepower at 11,000 rpm, with 114 Nm of torque at 9,250 rpm. These figures are significant for a motorcycle weighing 226 kilograms when fully fueled. The competition, with the Ducati Multistrada V4 leading the way, forces Munich to remain vigilant. BMW has therefore revised the engine mapping and intake tracts to gain five extra horsepower, without altering the engine architecture. The result is surgical. Below 8,000 rpm, the engine purrs without being particularly expressive, which may surprise those coming from a high-torque, low-rpm machine. But past that point, the engine abruptly awakens and propels the 214 kilograms dry weight with an intensity that should remind some riders that the BMW S 1000 XR is not a leisurely ride. The announced top speed of 200 km/h also seems conservative considering what the engine hints at on the highway.
What distinguishes this BMW S 1000 XR test from previous generations is the extent of the standard-fitted electronic package. Dynamic ESA suspension automatically adjusts its damping according to the road and riding style. The six-axis inertial unit gives the ABS curve responsiveness, the traction control DTC intervenes with surgical precision, and Hill Start Control Pro prevents embarrassing rollbacks on inclines. Four riding modes cover a spectrum from wet road to track, with a Dynamic Pro mode that releases the horses in all gears and leaves the rider responsible for managing wheelies. For an audience of experienced riders, this level of parameterization is a real added value. For a first-time rider of this size, it’s best to start in Road mode to understand what you’re dealing with.

The aluminum frame integrates the engine as a structural element, which tightens the masses and partly explains the machine's liveliness when leaned over. The 45 mm inverted fork with 150 mm of travel behaves more like that of a sporty roadster than an all-terrain trail bike. The 120/70-ZR17 and 190/55-ZR17 tires, inherited from the S 1000 RR, confirm this orientation. Braking, entrusted to four-piston calipers on dual floating discs at the front, offers precise and well-dosed bite, which is all the more appreciated as the total mass demands anticipation as soon as the pace increases. The 6.5-inch color TFT screen centralizes everything, including navigation via the BMW Motorrad Connected app, and keeps company during long hours on the highway with frankly correct sunlight readability.

Displayed at 19,480 euros in base version, the BMW S 1000 XR price reflects a high-end positioning justified by the density of standard equipment. The options catalog remains extensive, from cases to the Pro bidirectional shifter and lightweight M rims, allowing you to build a custom machine but also to make the bill climb quickly. Those looking for a used BMW S 1000 XR will find on recent models well-equipped machines at more accessible prices. Facing the Multistrada V4, the XR concedes a little in versatility and low-speed feel, but takes over when you seek to push on a winding road. It is not the ideal machine for beginners, nor for traversing forest tracks. It is, however, the preferred tool of the road rider who wants to devour kilometers quickly, comfortably, and with the satisfaction of never lacking resources.
