Overview

Imagine that a BMW engineer, after a long night at work, decided to graft the heart of a superbike onto the frame of a road-going trail bike. The result might not be coherent on paper, but it could well redefine an entire category. That’s exactly what the BMW S 1000 XR 2022 offers, a machine that refuses to be put in a box, and openly claims it.

BMW S 1000 XR

The inline four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 999 cc is the centerpiece of this proposition. Derived from the S 1000 RR engine, it has been revised here to coexist with daily road use, without losing its character. The 165 horsepower available at 11,000 rpm remains a figure difficult to justify in this category, compared to a Ducati Multistrada V4 or a KTM 1290 Super Adventure, which prioritize a more versatile balance. The torque of 114 Nm at 9,250 rpm follows the same logic. In reality, the engine is discreet at low rpm, almost disappointing if you expect an immediate response in the midrange. But past 8,000 rpm, the machine changes character. Acceleration becomes frank, physical, with a progression that unmistakably recalls the sporty genes of the engine. It’s no longer a trail bike you’re riding, it’s something more tense, more demanding. A rider looking for supple comfort at low rpm may be left wanting.

The chassis has been completely reworked for this generation. The aluminum frame now integrates the engine as a structural element in its own right, which has made it possible to shave off a few kilos. Semi-active Dynamic ESA suspension now comes standard, with 45 mm inverted forks and an aluminum swingarm, both electronically controlled. The 150 mm travel on each side positions the BMW S 1000 XR clearly on the road side rather than pure trail. The 790 mm seat height remains accessible for an average build, and the riding position, although slightly shifted forward compared to the previous generation, retains a pronounced touring character. The 226 kg when fully fueled is felt at low speed and in maneuvers, but almost disappears on the open road, where the machine regains its true nature.

BMW S 1000 XR

The electronic equipment constitutes a strong argument to justify the displayed price of 18,900 euros. Six-axis inertial unit, cornering ABS Pro, traction control DTC, four riding modes including a Dynamic Pro that releases all the power, Hill Start Control Pro, Dynamic Brake Control, 6.5-inch color TFT screen inherited from the RR: the list is long. Too long, some will say, who will prefer to spend time on the road rather than in the menus. The announced consumption of 6.4 liters per 100 km combined with the 20-liter tank provides correct autonomy for a sporty trail bike, sufficient for long stages without obsession for gas stations.

BMW S 1000 XR

The BMW S 1000 XR is aimed at a specific profile: the experienced rider who wants to travel fast, who doesn't need off-road capability but claims the ability to blast along a national road when the urge arises. The used market, very plentiful since the 2016 versions up to the recent ones, is proof of the enthusiasm for this concept. Those looking for a used BMW S 1000 XR will easily find examples from the 2020 or 2021 model years at more accessible prices, with the same engine block essentially. The 2022 version refines the chassis, enriches the electronics and lightens the structure, without mechanical revolution. It is a measured, coherent evolution, in the service of a machine that already knows very well what it is: not the most versatile in its category, but probably the most intense to ride on a winding road.
