Overview
Imagine a S 1000 RR that decided to go on a road trip rather than a track day, that swapped its slicks for road tires and increased its ground clearance by a few centimeters. That’s roughly the DNA of the BMW S 1000 XR. Munich didn't invent the sport tourer, but with this machine, the Bavarian manufacturer has redefined what the genre can truly mean when you inject 165 horsepower at 11,000 rpm into its veins.

The inline four-cylinder engine that powers the BMW S 1000 XR comes directly from the track-going RR’s engine block, but it has been thoroughly toned down for road use. Revised camshafts, redesigned intake ducts, a reduced maximum rpm of 2,000 rpm compared to the track bike: the result is an engine that delivers its 114 Nm of torque at 9,250 rpm with a progressiveness absent from the pure sportbike. It remains, however, an engine that demands respect. By comparison, the Ducati Multistrada 1200 DVT and the KTM 1290 Super Adventure play in the same league, and the BMW S 1000 XR test shows that the Bavarian doesn't back down from either of them on the open road. With 228 kilograms all fueled up and a 20-liter tank, range keeps pace without forcing the issue.
The chassis is a design unique to the XR, not a simple adaptation of the roadster’s perimeter frame. Four-element aluminum structure, engine used as a stressed member, two-arm aluminum swingarm: it’s robust, designed to handle both the weight of luggage and the enthusiasm of a rider who wants to push it too hard. The 46 mm inverted fork borrows the philosophy of the S 1000 R, with compression and rebound adjustments. The wheelbase of 1,548 mm provides stability at high speed, which is important when talking about a motorcycle capable of flirting with indicated speeds of 200 km/h. The BMW S 1000 XR maximum speed is not an empty promise, and anyone who has already brushed a long highway straightaway understands why BMW S 1000 XR luggage is among the best-selling accessories in the range.

The electronic arsenal is worth dwelling on, as it is so dense. As standard, you get traction control ASC and two riding modes: Road, which calibrates throttle response and aids for everyday use on dry asphalt, and Rain, which reduces power to 146 horsepower and softens all interventions. The Pro modes optionally unlock traction control DTC with angle sensor, which is more refined in its management, as well as Dynamic and Dynamic Pro modes. The latter allows the rider to manage wheelies themselves and clearly requires solid experience. ABS Pro, which adapts braking to the lean angle, is one of the real good ideas of this generation. The Shifter Pro for clutchless gear changes completes the picture, also optionally available. On a used BMW S 1000 XR, checking which options were selected when ordering radically changes the budget and riding experience.

What remains debatable is the price positioning. Displayed at 17,000 euros at its launch, the XR targeted an audience of experienced sport touring riders, willing to pay the price for a high-end versatility. Subsequent generations, which are regularly found under the terms BMW S 1000 XR 2020, 2021, 2022 or 2024, have continued to evolve on these solid foundations, each model year adding detailed corrections rather than a revolution. The 2019 version remains a healthy base, available on the used BMW S 1000 XR market at prices that finally make it accessible to those who hesitated. It’s not a beginner’s bike, nor a trail capable of swallowing forest tracks: the 120/70-17 and 190/55-17 tire fitment says it clearly. It’s a supercharged GT that devours passes and highways with the same appetite, and that will remind you to behave if you forget.
