Overview
Imagine a superbike rider forced to convert to long-distance touring. He retains his reflexes, his ability to read a curve, his instinct to brush against physical limits. But he now carries luggage. That’s roughly what the BMW S 1000 XR represents in today’s motorcycle landscape: a machine that categorically refuses to pick a camp, and that embraces this ambiguity with a rather disconcerting aplomb.

The inline four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 999 cc originates directly from the S 1000 RR. BMW has not sought to hide this lineage, it exhibits it. Compression ratio increased to 12.5:1, shortened and lightened connecting rods, water and oil pumps merged into a single module, intake and camshaft profiles completely revised: the entire assembly gains five kilograms compared to the previous generation. The result? 165 horsepower at 11,000 rpm and 114 Nm of torque at 9,250 rpm. Figures that make direct competitors, including the Ducati Multistrada V4 and KTM SuperAdventure, pale in comparison. What is more surprising is that BMW has not increased power compared to the previous version. In a segment where every revision is ritually accompanied by a few extra horsepower, this choice is striking. The effort has been focused on low-end flexibility rather than the catalog figure. On the road, the engine remains fundamentally a high-revving beast: below 8,000 rpm, it turns smoothly but without particular conviction. Past that threshold, the character changes completely. Acceleration becomes frank, almost aggressive, and the 223.6 kg when fully fueled suddenly seems to dissolve.
The chassis has also been profoundly revised. The aluminum frame more closely integrates the engine as a structural element, which lightens the assembly and compacts the cell. The swingarm becomes lighter while abandoning the toggle lever system, which improves damping responsiveness. The 45 mm inverted telescopic fork and the rear shock both benefit from the semi-active Dynamic ESA suspension now standard, with electronic adjustment of compression, rebound, and preload. The wheelbase of 1,522 mm remains within the standard of the segment, and the seat height of 790 mm constitutes a reasonable entry point for an average build. The riding position is clearly on the trail-touring side: high handlebars, non-aggressive triangle, correct protection thanks to the adjustable windshield. It is not a camouflaged sportbike, even if the RR genes constantly lurk beneath the surface.

The electronic arsenal deserves a serious mention. The six-axis inertial unit paves the way for active cornering ABS Pro, four distinct riding modes (Rain, Road, Dynamic, Dynamic Pro), traction control DTC, Hill Start Control Pro, and Dynamic Brake Control that prohibits any improper manipulation of the throttle during braking. The 6.5-inch color TFT screen inherited from the RR centralizes all of this with real readability and graphic quality. Smartphone connectivity, lean angles, instantaneous consumption, gear ratio: the dashboard has enough to occupy a meticulous rider during long journeys. The announced consumption of 6.36 liters per 100 km coupled with the 20-liter tank gives a theoretical range exceeding 300 km, which is suitable for serious grand touring use.

At a base price of 19,890 euros, the BMW S 1000 XR 2023 price positions itself at the top of the sporty maxi-trail market. The buyer considering a used BMW S 1000 XR to reduce the bill will find a well-supplied market, with several generations available from the BMW S 1000 XR 2016 to the recent versions. The options catalog remains dense: integrated BMW S 1000 XR luggage, bidirectional quickshifter, lightweight M rims, heated grips, second-generation Dynamic ESA Pro. It is easy to exceed 22,000 euros once the list is seriously configured. It is not a motorcycle for all profiles. The beginner rider will quickly be overwhelmed by the high-revving engine's temperament. The pure touring rider seeking primarily all-terrain versatility will naturally turn to the GS. On the other hand, the experienced rider who takes long, fast rides on the road network and wants the power of a sportbike with the comfort of a trail will find in this BMW S 1000 XR test enough to justify every euro spent. It is precisely this claimed in-between, sometimes frustrating at low speed, formidable as soon as you really open the throttle, that makes the unique identity of this machine.
