Overview

When Suzuki revived the Katana name in 2019, it was a risky bet. Resurrecting an icon from the '80s — the one that had blown away the competition with its sharp lines designed by Hans Muth — was never going to be done without taking a stand. The 7584 version presented at the Motor Bike Expo in Verona in early 2020 makes no claim to being a limited series sold at dealerships. It is a demonstration piece, an exercise in memory, whose name draws from two founding dates: 1975, the year the project idea first took root, and 1984, the release of the 750 with its retractable headlight inspired by the ED-2 concept.

The approach is an honest one. Suzuki is not trying to dress a new engine in nostalgic bodywork. The mechanical base comes directly from the GSX-S 1000, a modern naked bike whose 999 cc inline four-cylinder produces 150 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 105.9 Nm at 9,500 rpm. All of it sits in an aluminum perimeter frame, with a 43 mm inverted fork up front and a monoshock at the rear. Four-piston Brembo calipers on twin 310 mm discs inspire confidence under braking. At 215 kg fully fueled and with a 12-liter tank, the Katana is no lightweight, but its 825 mm seat height remains accessible for a rider of average build. The claimed top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

What sets the 7584 apart is its color treatment. The standard livery gives way to a more austere matte grey, across which run blue and yellow stripes drawn directly from the period palette: the blue is a historic Suzuki signature, the yellow evokes the engine covers, wheels, and cam cover that fans of the first generation will recognize instantly. The side air intakes have been removed to clean up the silhouette. At the rear, a Yoshimura R-11 exhaust replaces the stock collector, a two-tone red and black seat contrasts with the rest of the bike, and a carbon front fender rounds out the list of visible modifications.

The Katana's positioning — in its commercial form as much as in this expo version — raises questions. Up against a Kawasaki Z900RS that plays the vintage card with greater stylistic refinement, or a Triumph Speed Triple that more fully embraces its modern character, the Katana seeks a balance that can feel unstable at times, caught between homage and contemporary relevance. At €20,000 in standard trim, it costs more than a Z900RS and demands genuine conviction from the buyer. A compression ratio of 12.2:1 and bore and stroke dimensions of 73.4 mm by 59 mm promise an engine that likes to rev, which suits an experienced rider far better than a newcomer.

The 7584 will never end up in someone's garage. It has made its rounds on the show circuit, drawn eyes, and fueled discussions on social media. Its role is fulfilled. What remains is the question this motorcycle has been putting to Suzuki since its return: does the brand truly believe in the Katana as a product with a future, or simply as a communication vehicle to stir up profitable nostalgia for the duration of a trade show?
