Overview
One hundred units. Japan only. That's what Suzuki is offering with this Katana finished in a red that wavers between ripe cherry and vintage automotive lacquer. The color is called Candy Darling Red, and it has to be said the name suits it well: something slightly excessive, unapologetically so, making no claim to reinvent the motorcycle but asserting its character without reservation.

The Katana remains what it has been since its return in 2019: a neo-retro roadster built on the technical platform of the GSX-S 1000, with its 150 horsepower delivered at 10,000 rpm from a 999 cc inline four-cylinder, 105.9 Nm of torque available at 9,500 rpm, and a wet weight of 215 kg on the scales. An aluminum perimeter frame, a 43 mm inverted fork, radially mounted Brembo calipers biting on 310 mm discs. The spec sheet hasn't changed by a single comma. What changes is the paint, and Suzuki owns that completely. The manufacturer surveyed its Japanese customers in spring 2020 to identify the most anticipated color. This one won out, and the brand decided to give it a full treatment rather than settling for a simple color swap.
The wheels therefore carry this deep red, while the handlebar, fork tubes, caps, chain adjusters and the chain links themselves receive a gold finish. The seat incorporates red stitching and a Katana logo embossed into the synthetic leather. That's the kind of detail that separates a successful special edition from a mere marketing exercise. Suzuki has done the work carefully, and it shows. The bike targets a buyer who wants something identifiable in a parking lot, someone who appreciates the historical reference to the 1980s Katana without actually riding a relic.
The problem is that this version will never leave the roads of the archipelago. One hundred units, online reservation with mandatory dealership collection, a few tens of thousands of yen premium over the standard price. In Europe, the base price of the Katana 1000 hovers around €12,642, positioning it against Yamaha's MT-10 or Kawasaki's Z1000. In this segment, the question of color is not trivial. The competition also plays the limited edition card to sustain desire around models whose mechanics change little from one year to the next.
It is not out of the question that Suzuki broadens production in the future, as it did with the centenary GSX-R 1000 R. For now, this red remains a Japanese exclusive, which gives it a particular status in the collector hierarchy. Frustrating for those watching from Europe, enticing for those lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.
