Overview

Imagine a superbike rider who decides one morning to go on vacation with his luggage. He keeps his engine, orders a higher handlebar, commissions a more imposing fairing, and hits the road as if nothing had happened. That's roughly the philosophy behind the 2021 BMW S 1000 XR, a machine that refuses to choose between pure performance and the comfort of grand touring. At a base price of €18,100, it targets an experienced rider who wants it all, now, without compromise.

BMW S 1000 XR

Under the redesigned fairing lies the same inline four-cylinder engine of 999 cc from the RR lineage, trimmed, lightened, and rationalized to lose five kilograms on the mechanics alone. BMW didn's seek to inflate the figures for this 2021 version: 165 horsepower at 11,000 rpm, 114 Nm at 9,250 rpm, nothing more than the previous generation. Faced with the Ducati Multistrada V4 or the KTM 1290 Super Adventure, the BMW S 1000 XR still displays one of the highest power outputs in the segment. The real work of the engineers focused on mid-range availability, where the engine sometimes lacked punch. The result is honest, but let's be lucid: this four-cylinder really doesn't come alive until above 8,000 rpm. Before that, it purrs cleanly, pulls correctly, but doesn't surprise anyone. Past that threshold, it's a different story. The thrust becomes frank, direct, almost aggressive for a machine weighing 226 kg fully fueled. You immediately understand where the DNA comes from.

The chassis has also benefited from a serious overhaul. The aluminum frame more closely integrates the engine as a structural element, the swingarm is both lighter and more responsive thanks to the elimination of linkages, and the suspension travel reaches 150 mm on both sides. Semi-active Dynamic ESA suspension comes standard on this generation, which really changes the game on a daily basis. ABS becomes Pro with cornering sensitivity, the six-axis inertial unit pilots the entire electronics package, and four riding modes allow you to go from Rain, very tame, to Dynamic Pro, which lets the rider manage wheelies themselves. The 6.5-inch color TFT screen centralizes all of this with excellent readability. Those looking for a complete BMW S 1000 XR test will find here a machine whose electronic richness requires several hours of familiarization before being fully exploited.

BMW S 1000 XR

Weight remains the sore subject. Officially, the machine has lost ten kilograms compared to its predecessor. In fact, the 2021 BMW S 1000 XR weighs 226 kg fully fueled, compared to 228 kg for the previous version. Bavarian arithmetic is thought-provoking. It's not a dealbreaker; the four-piston radial-mount calipers offer precise and controllable braking despite the mass, but it must be taken into account as soon as the pace increases. The riding position, on the other hand, is consistent with the sport-touring positioning: the handlebar is 30 mm narrower than before, the rider is 20 mm further forward, and the saddle is 790 mm from the ground. Comfortable for average builds on long distances, not ideal for shorter riders.

BMW S 1000 XR

The list of options is as long as the list of alpine roads. BMW S 1000 XR cases with integrated floating mount in the rear fairing, M rims, bidirectional quick-shifter, heated grips, cruise control, adaptive cornering light. All these additional budget items recall that BMW also knows how to sell accessories. For those wondering about a used BMW S 1000 XR or price comparisons between the 2020, 2022, or 2023 models, the 2021 version represents the first year of this revised platform, therefore the starting point of a reliability yet to be confirmed over time. It's not the GS and its legendary universality. It's a road and fast highway machine, tailored for riders who embrace their sporty side even when traveling.
