Overview
Imagine that a Munich engineer received the following instruction: take the engine and chassis of a competition roadster, graft them onto a raised platform, dress the whole thing in bodywork hinting at adventure, and deliver something capable of crossing France in one breath. The result is the BMW S 1000 XR, a machine that categorically refuses to fit into a box.

The inline four-cylinder engine beating beneath this massive fairing has little to do with the traditional trail philosophy. Remanufactured from the S 1000 RR block, with redesigned intake ducts and recalibrated camshafts to lower the peak RPM by 2,000 RPM, it still develops 165 horsepower at 11,000 RPM and 112 Nm of torque at 9,250 RPM. For the BMW S 1000 XR test, these figures are enough to immediately classify the machine into a category of its own. The Ducati Multistrada 1200 DVT and the KTM 1290 Super Adventure play in the same league, but neither claims such a direct lineage with a circuit sportbike. Here, the engine also serves as a structural element of the perimeter aluminum frame, a four-part structure that gives the XR its own skeleton, distinct from that of the S 1000 R and RR.
At 228 kg fully fueled, the BMW S 1000 XR weighs 10 kg less than an R 1200 GS, but 20 kg more than the roadster from which it originated. The 20-liter tank and a wheelbase of 1,548 mm provide reassuring stability on long distances, while the 46 mm inverted fork and suspension travel of 140 mm at the front and 150 mm at the rear offer enough compliance to swallow degraded roads without leaving a mark. It is not a true off-road machine, the 120/70-17 and 190/55-17 tire fitment confirms this without ambiguity. These dimensions speak of road and sport, not forest track.

The electronic richness of this machine deserves attention. As standard, you get traction control ASC and two riding modes: Road, calibrated for efficiency on dry asphalt, and Rain, which reduces power to 146 hp and softens every throttle input. The Pro modes add traction control DTC with angle sensor, two Dynamic and Dynamic Pro modes for riders who know what they are doing, semi-active ESA suspension, Shifter Pro for clutchless gear changes, and cruise control. ABS Pro, which modulates braking based on the lean angle, is one of the most accomplished systems of the moment in this segment. Those looking for a used BMW S 1000 XR on Le Bon Coin or elsewhere will find well-equipped examples if they check for the presence of these options, often ticked by first owners.

The 840 mm seat height clearly positions the rider in a high and airy posture, halfway between the nervous roadster and relaxed grand touring. The dashboard borrowed from the S lineage maintains a permanent sporty ambiance. With a starting price of 16,300 euros in 2017, the XR was in the upper end of the range, but successive evolutions of the model, consultable in the technical specifications of the 2020, 2021, 2022 and subsequent versions, have justified this price ambition with constant enrichments. For anyone looking for a BMW S 1000 XR motorcycle capable of reaching two regions before lunch, carrying side cases for the weekend, and transforming into a sharp machine on a mountain road, the proposition remains difficult to contradict. The target audience is clearly the experienced globetrotter, comfortable with power and eager to never choose between comfort and adrenaline.
