Overview

As a high-performance business jet, the S 1000 XR cannot stand idly by in the face of increasingly fierce competition. To ensure a strong presence on radars, it deploys two assets. First, a restrained evolution in 2024 with more power and equipment; then the presence of a shock commando with the formidable M 1000 XR (we will come back to this later).

Facing it, Ducati multiplies provocations with its Multistrada V4. BMW therefore offers additional vitality with 5 extra horsepower in the engine. Peak power is still delivered at 11,000 rpm but now reaches 170 horsepower. That's starting to be more than mean! No modifications to the torque, with 11.6 kg-m at 9,250 rpm. It only took retuning the engine mapping and intake channels to achieve this result. A few extra watts, certainly… But not too many, so as not to encroach on the M crossover sector, totally bonkers with its 201 horsepower – for 6,600 euros more. Ouch… !!!

To mark the occasion, the manufacturer has subtly retouched the style of the XR. This focuses on the painted body-color “beak,” the inclusion of small air intakes in the flanks under the seat, a textured surface for the fairing flanks; and increased equipment – in exchange for a noticeable inflation in the base price. In addition to the keyless on-board system, the German trail-supersport features adaptive cornering headlights, a USB port, a thicker (but the height goes from 840 mm to 850 mm) and larger seat, a more powerful battery and new suspension springs for more precise handling.

The scope is not only to retain its assets but also to ensure the sporty image of the segment. With the S 1000 XR, you no longer really know where the trail begins and when the hypersport ends. The mix of genres is such that you can imagine anything: an S 1000 R wanting to become a road crossover… A GS that has eaten a superbike… The mutation of an X5 into two wheels… The son of Usain Bolt and a Fendt 1050 Vario…. Or simply one of the fastest and sportiest maxi-trails in the world.

Its engine delivers 170 hp. The engine is derived from the RR sport model: a reinforced, lightweight, retouched mechanical unit in every way to sharpen its skills. Surprisingly, the XR has not retained the Shiftcam variable distribution system. The M 1000 XR, on the other hand, does not deprive itself of it. The engine may output 40 horsepower less than the sport model and be less “technological,” but it is still impressive when you push it into the higher revs. A double face that positions it more as a Sport-GT than a Trail-GT. Even in the previous version, the low-end and mid-range thrust was certainly present but ultimately not very expressive. You get the false impression that it's lacking under the throttle. But when the crankshaft rotation exceeds 8,000 rpm, the fury shows its teeth. From then on, acceleration becomes frantic; the shoulders of the road disappear; the horizon evolves into a straight line. It sends it hard, with a liveliness worthy of a large sportbike. Enough to easily overwhelm you if you don't keep a cool head. There, at high revs, the driver really feels the genes of the S 1000 RR.

The large XR has loaded up the electronics backpack. The arms race charges and changes the game. This is the case for the semi-active Dynamic ESA suspension, installed as standard. As with traction control DTC, the MSR engine braking regulation, and four Riding Modes. With the installation of a 6-axis inertial unit, ABS becomes Pro, meaning reactive in corners. For starts on slopes, Hill Start Control Pro facilitates the maneuver by acting on the brakes. Another recent improvement for the trail is the installation of Dynamic Brake Control – it prevents acceleration during braking, in case the driver puts a burst of throttle without thinking. We also find automatic turn signals and all-LED headlights.

Proximity to the RR has also allowed it to adopt its dashboard, which has always been. Everything plays on a 6.5-inch color TFT screen. With graphics among the most beautiful in current production. It offers the driver several display themes, a navigation system once the house app is installed on the smartphone, the Riding Modes and assistance settings, the angles taken during driving, the trips, the range, the speed, the engine speed, the intensity of the braking, the gear engaged… Exploring it completely will take you a good part of the morning.

Rest assured, BMW has kept a nice reserve in options. A long list, presenting a speed regulator, heated grips, a more evolved Dynamic ESA Pro, even lighter M rims, the Pro Up&Down shifter, an enlarged windshield, cases, different types of saddle, carbon fiber parts, etc, etc… to the center stand.

In terms of the chassis, the “Flex Frame” aluminum frame uses the engine a lot as a stiffening element. Suspension travel is 150 mm, closer to that of a roadster than a trail. At this level, you can guess an increased desire for dynamism. The wheels come from the S 1000 RR.

At the bottom of the 45 mm fork legs, the radial fixings carry four-piston Hayes calipers. The braking is biting without being violent, powerful, and easily dosable. Just think a little about the 227 kilograms of the machine.. No problem with safety or efficiency; just take that into account when the pace increases.

On board the BMW, you are seated in a trail-travel position. The driver will be sensitive to the sportiness of the machine but also to the protection of the adjustable windshield or the integrated luggage supports in the rear fairing. The fixing system is “floating,” to center itself and reduce the incidence on the stability of the machine.

The band of high-performance trails welcomes only a few models but they are of a strong temperament. The S 1000 XR continues this decade with a better chassis, plenty of power and even more electronics. It is less versatile than the reference GS but formidable when it comes to making powder speak.

The 4 Riding Modes of the BMW S 1000 XR:

-Rain: supple throttle response, reduced engine torque in gears 1 to 3, maximum engine braking torque and MSR.ABS Pro in Standard mode. DTC maximum stability on wet road surfaces. Anti-wheeling at maximum.

-Road: optimal throttle response, reduced engine torque in gears 1 and 2, maximum engine braking torque and MSR.ABS Pro in Standard mode. DTC high stability on dry road surfaces. Possibility of moderate wheeling.

-Dynamic: optimal throttle response, reduced engine torque in gears 1 and 2, maximum engine braking torque and MSR.ABS Pro in Standard mode. DTC high performance on dry road surfaces. Possibility of moderate wheeling.

-Dynamic Pro: optimal throttle response, maximum torque in all gears. It is possible to combine in all gears maximum torque with a gentle throttle response. Maximum engine braking torque and MSR medium, with the possibility of adjusting the engine braking torque and the MSR to a minimum.ABS Pro adjustable in 5 levels. DTC maximum performance. Free wheeling possible, where the rider must brake the rear wheel to prevent it from turning over.
