Overview
Do you remember the time when a 600 sportbike would glue your back to the tank just by looking at its tachometer? The 2012 Yamaha YZF-R6 is a bit of the last witness of that era, a circuit brute that chose not to compromise with comfort. With 124 horsepower at 14,500 rpm, it doesn't have the brute power of a liter bike, but it's precisely its character that makes it charming, a character much sharper than that of the 2020 R6, which is more sanitized.

Beneath its appearance, almost identical to that of 2008, this machine hides mechanics worked with watchmaker's precision. The secret lies in its YCC-I variable intake system and record compression ratio of 13.1:1, which offer it a touch of soul – and above all torque – in the mid-range. Don't be fooled, it remains a high-revving hysteric, requiring the rider to play with the gear selector to keep it in its comfort zone, beyond 10,000 rpm. This is what distinguishes it from a CBR600RR, which is more refined, and brings it closer to a GSX-R750, which is more generous in power. The chassis, a refined aluminum Deltabox, and the 41 mm inverted fork offer surgical precision in corners, almost making you forget its 189 kg when fully fueled, a weight that sometimes surprises when compared to that of an R6 2008.
But this pursuit of pure efficiency comes at a price, and not just the 12,499 € it cost at the time. The 850 mm seat height and the hyper-aggressive rider position make it an execrable accomplice for the city or long journeys. It is a machine designed for the track or winding roads, where its radial brakes with monoblock calipers and its stiff frame reveal all their potential. For road use, opinions on the Yamaha YZF-R6 600 from 2003 onwards often converge on this point: it is a demanding tool.

So, who is it for? For the pure and hard track rider looking for raw sensations, or for the expert road rider wanting the most radical 600 sportbike of its generation. It doesn't have the versatility of a Street Triple, nor the easy power of a 750. But for those who accept its character, it offers sensations that few machines, even more recent ones, can still provide. It is the end of an era, that of fire-tempered supersport 600s.
