Overview
When Bologna persists and signs for a third generation without starting from scratch, one is entitled to raise an eyebrow. The Ducati Panigale V4 2023 should have ceded its place to a clean slate. It is here, carried over, amended, and it has the quiet arrogance of those who know they have little to prove. At €25,790, this is not a purchase, it is a statement of intent.

What strikes you first is the consistency of the approach. Ducati did not seek to shake everything up. The winglets have been redesigned, more compact, less spectacular to the naked eye, but they still generate 37 kg of downforce at 300 km/h. The seat has been flattened, reupholstered with a more aggressive covering to keep the rider anchored during late braking. The fuel tank has gained a liter to reach 17 liters, which won’t change life on the track but is welcome on an impromptu road trip. These details seem insignificant when taken separately; added together, they signal a motorcycle that has been reworked by people who really ride it.
The heart of the matter is, of course, this 90-degree V-four cylinder engine, the 1,103 cc Desmosedici Stradale, whose Twin Pulse timing gives it a character unlike any other. 215.5 horsepower at 13,000 rpm, 123.6 Nm of torque at 9,500 rpm, all in a chassis that weighs 175 kg dry. For the Ducati Panigale V4 technical specifications, the raw figures tell only part of the story. The gearbox has been redesigned, drawing direct inspiration from the Ducati Panigale V4 R, with longer first and second gears to suit the technical circuit profile. The final ratio gains 1.8%, which translates to approximately 5 km/h more top speed, approaching the Ducati Panigale V4 maximum speed announced at 300 km/h. Facing it, the Aprilia RSV4 and the BMW M 1000 RR play in the same league, but neither possesses that particular sound, that balance between mechanical brutality and electronic sophistication that Ducati has cultivated since the first Panigale.

Electronics, precisely, represent the real step forward of this 2023 version compared to the Ducati Panigale V4 2021. Engine Brake Control goes to version Evo 2 and now modulates its intensity according to the load exerted on the rear wheel, which allows the motorcycle to tighten its trajectory on corner entry in a much more natural way. The DQS Evo 2 quickshifter has been refined through action on the ignition timing for smoother gear changes. The 6-axis inertial unit orchestrates all of this in real time, from traction control DTC Evo 3 to wheelie control DWC, through cornering ABS and the launch control assistant. Four riding modes, from Race A to Street, calibrate the whole thing according to the context. In Street mode, power is limited to 150 horsepower with a progressive mapping. In Race A, the 215.5 hp are available from the second gear, with an ABS that only intervenes on the front wheel. It is this kind of granularity that separates the Ducati Panigale V4 from generalist competition.

Remains the question of the audience. The Ducati Panigale V4 used attracts enthusiasts of beautiful mechanics who know they are buying a track machine homologated for the road, not a sporty road bike. The base version, with its Showa BPF 43 mm fork and Sachs shock absorber, already delivers a level of performance that most riders will never saturate. Those who want to push further will go for the Ducati Panigale V4 S and its Öhlins suspension, or even for the Ducati Panigale V4 SP2 for assumed track use. This third iteration of the Panigale V4 is a mature machine, refined in its details, which in turn demands that its rider be so as well.
