Overview

Imagine riding a motorcycle, turning the key, and immediately feeling that something is different about your relationship with danger. That’s exactly what the Ducati Panigale V4 S provokes from the very first meters. Not because it’s uncontrollable, but because it reminds you, with brutal honesty, that it comes from somewhere else, from a world where lap times matter more than comfort. At €31,890, it doesn’t claim to be just another road-going sportbike. It's a radical proposition, a tacit contract between Bologna and the rider.

Ducati Panigale V4 S

Since its launch in 2018, the V4 has progressively refined its definition. Aerodynamic winglets appeared in 2020, then were redesigned in 2022 to gain efficiency while reducing visual bulk. At 300 km/h, they generate 37 kg of vertical downforce, a figure that speaks to track riders but will remain theoretical for most owners. The 2022 model year represented the most profound revision in the model's history, touching simultaneously the engine, chassis, electronics, and ergonomics. For 2023, Ducati has refined the electronics without reinventing everything: the quickshifter upshifts and downshifts more smoothly thanks to reworked ignition timing, traction control responds with greater precision, and engine braking evolves to the EBC EVO 2, modulated differently according to the gear engaged and the position in the corner.

The heart of the matter is this V4 Desmosedici Stradale of 1,103 cm3, 90 degrees, desmodromic distribution, four valves per cylinder. Its 215.5 hp at 13,000 rpm places the Ducati Panigale V4 S technical specifications in a category of its own, well above an Aprilia RSV4 or a BMW M1000RR on paper. The torque of 123.6 Nm at 9,500 rpm is generous but, above all, usable from 6,000 rpm, with 80% of the maximum value already available at that engine speed. The counter-rotating crankshaft reduces the gyroscopic effect, which translates into a motorcycle that pivots with disconcerting ease for 195.5 kg fully fueled. The power-to-weight ratio flirts with 0.90 kg/hp, a territory reserved for competition machines.

Ducati Panigale V4 S

The chassis plays in the same league. The Öhlins NPX25/30 43 mm fork with TiN treatment, the TTX36 shock absorber, the entire assembly piloted by the Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 in event mode: it’s the same equipment as on motorcycles entered in the World Superbike Championship. Brembo Stylema calipers bite down on 330 mm discs with surgical precision. The ergonomics have been reworked around the tank and seat to better anchor the rider, reduce muscle effort, and postpone fatigue on the track. The 850 mm seat height naturally selects its audience.

Ducati Panigale V4 S

It is precisely here that the Ducati Panigale V4 S deserves an honest perspective. It is designed for riders who know what they’re doing, who have track time, who can exploit the four riding modes, navigate the TFT 5-inch submenus, and understand what it means to adjust the DTC EVO 3, the DWC EVO, or the DSC. For an experienced rider seeking a machine to evolve between road and track, it has no serious rivals in its category. For someone looking for a sportbike to ride primarily on the road, less demanding and more affordable choices exist. The Panigale V4 S 2023 is not a compromise motorcycle, and that is precisely its greatest quality.
