Overview

When Bologna decided to abandon the V2 and move to an inline four-cylinder in a production Superbike, purists nearly swallowed their helmets. The V2 had been Ducati’s DNA for decades, the signature sound, the particular temperament that loyal fans recognized with their eyes closed. Moving to an inline four-cylinder was a betrayal of something. Except Ducati doesn’s betray; Ducati reinterprets. And the Ducati Panigale V4 S, the high-end version of this new generation, provides a rather definitive answer to the debate.

Ducati Panigale V4 S

The silhouette doesn’t radically break with the visual heritage. The family resemblance is there, the taut shapes, the aggressive front end. It’s not an aesthetic revolution, and that’s not a criticism, because Ducati is betting everything on what’s hidden beneath the bodywork. The 1103 cm3 Desmosedici Stradale engine develops 214 horsepower at 13,000 rpm for 124 Nm of torque at 10,000 rpm. These are the power figures of the Ducati Panigale V4 S, and they leave no ambiguity about the machine’s intentions. The S version adds targeted weight reduction compared to the standard: lithium-ion battery, forged aluminum Marchesini wheels, and the weight comes to 195 kg fully fueled. Compared to an Aprilia RSV4 RF or a BMW S1000RR of the same era, the power-to-weight ratio is in the same register of excellence.

What really distinguishes the S from the base version is the rolling chassis. The 43 mm Öhlins NIX30 fork and the TTX36 shock absorber are controlled by the Smart EC 2.0 system, an electronic suspension management system that can operate in two ways. The rider can manually fine-tune compression, rebound, and steering damper via virtual clicks from the dashboard, with 32 settings for the suspension and 10 for the steering. Or they let the 6-axis inertial unit do the work and the system adapts the damping in real time according to the selected riding mode. It is precisely this level of sophistication that justifies the Ducati Panigale V4 S price of 27,990 euros. It’s a sum, and no one will claim otherwise.

The electronic assists constitute a complete ecosystem. Traction control, anti-wheelie, bidirectional shifter, cornering ABS, engine brake control, launch control: it’s all there, organized around three riding modes. Race delivers the 214 horsepower with the least electronic intervention, the ABS working only on the front wheel. Sport activates the slip control during braking and allows for certain controlled drifts. Street softens the responses and provides more safety for road use. This trio corresponds well to the reality of using the machine: a serious track rider will be in Race, a Sunday sports rider in Sport, and those finding themselves crossing a city in the rain will thank the Street mode. The performance of the Ducati Panigale V4 S remains accessible in these three contexts, but at very different levels of risk. The top speed announced at 300 km/h with a seat height of 830 mm recalls that this motorcycle is not designed for beginners.

Ducati Panigale V4 S

For those who want to go even further in track-oriented development, there is the Corse version with even more track-focused equipment. Ducati Panigale V4 S examples from the 2018-2021 generation have also resisted depreciation, proof that the market recognizes the value of these machines. This Panigale V4 S targets the experienced rider who wants a Superbike that is truly usable on a daily basis thanks to its modes, but capable of performing on the track without compromise. It’s a clear, assumed, and technically honest position.
