Overview
How many horsepower does it take for a road bike to resemble a race replica? Ducati answers with 214, a gold Öhlins fork, and a V4 screaming to 13,000 rpm. The Ducati Panigale V4 S 2020 marks a significant evolution in the range: the Bologna manufacturer closes the gap a little more between its homologated hypersport and the WSBK-ready V4 R. The two machines are now so visually similar that only the brushed aluminum fuel tank still allows them to be distinguished when parked.

The most visible novelty concerns aerodynamics. Winglets appear on the sides of the fairing, a direct inheritance from MotoGP, to generate downforce at high speed and stabilize the front under acceleration. The windscreen gains height, the headstock widens by 15 mm on each side, and the fairing sides increase by 38 mm. The air intakes shaped like shark gills improve the efficiency of cooling by 6% for the water radiator and 16% for the oil radiator. These aerodynamic elements remain in injection-molded plastic, which seems difficult to justify on a machine priced at 28,890 euros. The V4 R receives carbon fiber; the S would have deserved the same treatment.
The frame is now that of the R, stiffer at the front. The fork drops 4 mm, the shock shortens 2 mm, and the center of gravity rises 5 mm. These adjustments may seem minimal, but they are felt in the saddle: corner entry gains precision, and stability under acceleration progresses. The springs have also been softened to better absorb degraded roads, a welcome compromise for those who do not live exclusively on the track.
The 1103 cm3 Desmosedici Stradale V4 retains its 214 horsepower at 13,000 rpm and its 124 Nm at 10,000 rpm. This engine is excluded from homologated competition precisely because it exceeds regulatory limits, but this is a constraint that enthusiasts of the Ducati Panigale V4 S will see as an advantage on the road. The Ducati Panigale V4 S technical specifications impress with its 195 kg fully fueled, 3 kg less than the standard version thanks to a lithium-ion battery and forged aluminum Marchesini rims. At a 835 mm seat height, with this level of power concentrated on so little mass, this is not a machine for novice riders.

Electronics remain the true area of excellence of the Ducati Panigale V4 S 2020. The Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 system pilots the NIX 30 fork and the TTX36 shock in real time, based on the data from a 6-axis inertial unit. The rider can manually adjust the suspensions by virtual clicks, 32 positions for the suspensions and 10 for the steering damper, or let the electronics work alone in adaptive mode. Three riding profiles frame the whole thing. Race reduces assistance to a minimum with an ABS limited to the front wheel for riders who know their stuff. Sport activates cornering ABS and slide control during braking for a balance between performance and safety. Street softens the responses for daily use. The bidirectional shifter has been made more reactive, and the Brembo Stylema calipers offer superior braking power than the M50s they replace.

For those looking for a used Ducati Panigale V4 S of this year, the improvements made in 2020 constitute a more accomplished base than the previous generation. Track purists will turn to the Ducati Panigale V4 S Corse or directly to the V4 R. But between the standard version and these extreme variations, the S holds a consistent positioning: technical enough to satisfy experienced riders, versatile enough not to discourage on every ride on the open road.
