Overview
Do you remember the time when a trail bike weighing over 250 kg fully fueled and costing over 10,000 euros would raise eyebrows? The 2001 Honda XL 1000 V Varadero precisely experienced this fate. Facing the undisputed reference in the segment, the BMW R 1150 GS, it arrived with a massive design and a high seat at 845 mm, a bold gamble for the Japanese firm. But history proved it right, as this big beast managed to convince with its unique character and absolute comfort.

Its heart beat with a rare personality: the famous 996 cc V-twin from the VTR 1000 Firestorm, reworked to deliver generous torque of 98 Nm at 6000 rpm. This engine, with its 95 horsepower, never lacks power and offers a surging propulsion that makes you forget the weight. On the road, the Varadero flies. The steel trellis frame, comfortable suspension with a 43 mm fork and the mono Pro-Link, as well as the excellent protection, create a cocoon ideal for the globetrotter eager for miles. The passenger is treated the same way, delighted. However, this legendary gluttony of the twin is a black mark; the average consumption of a Honda XL 1000 V Varadero, especially on 2003 models or even the first 1999 version, can easily make you wince. The five-speed gearbox doesn't help to save fuel, an aspect often highlighted in reviews of the Honda XL 1000 V Varadero.
In dynamics, it surprises. For a machine of this wheelbase and this mass, the handling is surprisingly good. The CBS coupled braking system offers palpable safety, even if the piloting remains oriented towards stability rather than agility of trajectories. As for the enduro spirit, it is mostly cosmetic. With a ground clearance of 195 mm and 110/80-R19 tires at the front, it can scrape a dirt path, but its off-road capabilities are limited. It is a high road bike, a queen of asphalt tongues that can reach 204 km/h effortlessly. Its audience? The traveler who prioritizes Honda comfort, reliability, and the character of a V2, rather than extreme adventure. Today, for those who own a Honda XL 1000 V Varadero 1000 between 2005 and 2009, an upgrade like a lithium battery Accossato ML LFP14-765 can even modernize the equipment.
Ultimately, the Varadero wrote its own legend. It didn't beat the GS on all terrains, but it offered a charismatic, comfortable, and robust alternative, proving that a big trail bike can have temperament without necessarily playing in the lightweight category. A choice that remains relevant for those seeking a machine capable of long-distance travel, with solid mechanics and an undeniable presence on the road.
