Overview
Twenty-five years the Bavarian flat-twin has been carving its path across every continent. In 2005, BMW decided to bid farewell to the R 1150 GS Adventure with an anniversary edition that reeks of adventure and nostalgia. The torch had already been passed to the 1200 GS, more modern, more powerful, but this final iteration of the 1150 deserves a closer look. It represents an era when the big German adventure bike hadn't yet plunged into the technology arms race, when mechanics took precedence over electronics.

Beneath its blue and white livery accented with black touches, this 25th anniversary edition carries its faithful 1130 cc flat-twin. The 85 horsepower delivered at 6,750 rpm won't intimidate a Multistrada on a boulevard, but the 96 Nm of torque available from just 5,250 rpm tells a different story. One of confident traction, of unhesitating acceleration out of a bend or on a beaten-up trail. The flat-twin has a signature nobody can replicate: a gentle side-to-side sway at idle, a linear surge of power, and a deep exhaust note that inspires confidence. The shaft drive and six-speed gearbox with a shortened first gear complete a package designed to devour miles without worrying about chain maintenance.
At 253 kg dry and 294 kg fully fuelled, the beast makes its presence known. It's a far cry from a KTM 950 Adventure, which is more spirited and roughly thirty kilos lighter. But the BMW compensates with a chassis of remarkable stability. The cast aluminium front subframe, paired with the 41 mm Telelever fork and its 210 mm of travel, smooths out imperfections with disconcerting composure. At the rear, the Paralever single-sided swingarm and its 220 mm of travel absorb heavy loads without flinching. The braking system, with its twin 305 mm front discs gripped by four-piston calipers and standard ABS Integral Sport, inspires rock-solid confidence. The seat perched at 900 mm is a reminder that this GS is aimed at taller riders or those willing to tiptoe at stops.
BMW lavished this limited edition with equipment. Heated grips, RID instrument console, hefty engine guards — everything is there for going far, for a long time. The 30-litre tank promises comfortable range, likely beyond 400 kilometres when ridden conservatively. And for those wanting to leave the tarmac, the manufacturer offered the option of fitting off-road tyres at no extra cost. A shrewd gesture acknowledging the machine's split personality, even though most owners would never venture beyond the dirt track leading to a countryside bed and breakfast.
At €14,190 in 2005, this R 1150 GS Adventure Edition 25 ans sat at the top of the range. It targeted the seasoned tourer, the kind who stacks up panniers and aims for Nordkapp or Dakar without necessarily going through competition. With the new 1200 GS already peeking around the corner, this edition served as a testament. A generous testament, from a motorcycle that laid the foundations of the adventure-touring segment as we know it today. Not the fastest with its 190 km/h top speed, not the most agile, but a machine whose reliability and character forged a community of devotees who, twenty years on, still refuse to let go.
