Overview

Whether you’re on a roadster, a sportbike, a trail bike, a bicycle, a skateboard, or a kayak, the observation will always be the same. It’s steep at the top of the Stelvio! An average of 10°C in summer. The temperament of the Guzzi bearing the same name will be warmer. The contained and intrinsic extravagance of its engine, its wise and muscular profile, a typically Italian charm: everything seems to make the road hot and joyful with the Moto-Guzzi 1000 Stelvio trail.

But taking this appellation does not make it the successor to the large 1200 trail operating from 2008 to 2016. That one positioned itself as an alternative to the essential 1200 GS, the 1200 Super Ténéré, or the 1200 Caponord (among others). Since then, the market has changed; and its positioning too. So, what about the new Stelvio? Simply a trail of a new dimension for Guzzi, forgetting everything from the past except the essential. Because, starting from the base of the V100 Mandello, the engine will transport adventure to other flavors.

This engine is the vibrant present and the future of the brand. Freshly broken-in, it has so far only powered the roadster-tourer Mandello. Here is its second setting, with equally cheerful aspirations. Equipped with liquid cooling, a much more modern design than air engines, the 1084 cm³ twin cylinder is the most powerful in Guzzi history with 115 horsepower. We’ve seen bigger (the 1400 of the Calif’) or crazier (the V8 of the Ottocilindri). But with a distinct character in the Mandello, liveliness, and strength in its entrails, the engine will give the Stelvio good wings. Guzzi has revised it a bit to validate Euro5+ and improve the transmission - of course by shaft, as with all Guzzis.

At first glance, it seems to be nothing more than a V100 Mandello raised. But that would be judging too quickly. It cannot deny the same genetics, recovering the engine, swingarm, monobrach, and transmission. It’s above that we begin to grasp the change. The design logically tends towards an expedition trend, obliterating tourism and taking on its functions. The electrically adjustable bubble in height (70 mm) and its appendages herald a beautiful protection. The rear pannier increases in amplitude, allowing a more robust appearance and announcing a more substantial autonomy. The Stelvio’s tank holds 21 liters.

Guzzi has reinforced the chassis - in case the rider is tempted by roads forgotten by tarmac - with more engine mounting points, a more robust frame, and a stronger monobrach. The braking system is also derived from the Mandello, therefore capable of strong braking with Brembo radial pistons on 320 mm discs. The spoked rims point towards an off-road dimension but the Stelvio does not hide that it will prefer, and by far, tarmac and long kilometers. A 19-inch front wheel, a miniature engine guard, 170 mm of travel, and Michelin Anakee Adventure tires... We can consider an excursion on gentle forest roads - but no more.

Like all large trails, after all. Except that the Stelvio will not be looking for trouble with the big sharks in the sector. Its target is now the 900 Tiger, Multistrada V2, 1050 V-Strom, 1100 Africa Twin Sports Adventure... Also the F 900 GS or 890 Adventure / Norden 901? Not really; These have more marked TT engagement aspirations.

Taking advantage of the in-house electronics, the rider can choose the temperament of the Stelvio via the 5 Riding Modes * present. The 4 derived from the Mandello (Sport, Strada, Turismo, Pioggia) plus an additional “Off-road”, to stick to the image of the trail. But Guzzi specifies: "this motorcycle is always ready for light off-road use." Q.E.D. It also has all the "necessary" current features, namely a color TFT screen (5 inches), traction control, a cornering-reactive ABS, cruise control, a quickshifter, a USB socket, adaptive headlights, and even onboard radar (as an option). These are part of the Piggio Fast Forward platform, bringing a detection technology - to be discovered in the fiche of the Stelvio PFF Rider Assistance Solution.

The comfort of travel can soar thanks to the multiple options provided: heated grips and seats, panniers, a 52-liter top case, tire pressure monitoring system, connected app for smartphone, crashbars, etc...

The offer of Moto-Guzzi in trails included (only) the V 85 TT and its adventure Travel version. A very nice machine but not robust enough to go and tap into the fat part of the segment. With this 1000 Stelvio, the Italian eagle brings a much stronger presence in its range. The motorcycle seems to have no shortage of assets, and above all brings a good taste of Lombardy terroir.

* The Riding Modes of the Stelvio in detail: - Turismo (Touring): The engine braking intervention is at a medium level, to facilitate deceleration with only the release of the throttle; the engine map is progressive (level 2 out of 3); traction control is at the third level out of four. - Pioggia (Rain): All electronic assists are adapted to better cope with difficult weather conditions. Engine braking is at a medium level; power is very gentle (level 3 out of 3); traction control is at the highest level. - Strada (Road): Engine braking is at a medium level; engine management is progressive (level 2 out of 3); traction control is at level 2 out of 4. - Sport: Enough to offer yourself a dynamic experience. Engine braking is not very present; the engine map is the most direct and sporty (level 1 out of 3); traction control is the least intrusive (first level out of four), while ABS has a calibration that allows very strong braking. - Off-Road: Specifically developed mode for off-road riding. Engine braking is very present and the engine management is the most direct. Traction control and ABS have specific calibrations for off-road: the first at the minimum intervention level, while the second is present only on the front wheel. It is possible to eliminate both traction control (in all riding modes) and ABS on both wheels (in off-road mode only).
