Overview
When Mandello del Lario decides to revive a name steeped in history, expectations are high. The new-generation Stelvio is not a simple cosmetic update; it’s a thorough redesign that breaks with the habits of the previous 1200 cm³. The steel trellis frame, the completely revised suspension with an inverted 46 mm fork and 170 mm of travel, the 6-speed gearbox with shaft drive – everything has been reimagined to align with a different ambition. Guzzi speaks of an "adventure touring" bike rather than a trail bike, and this nuance says it all about the target audience: the long-distance rider who wants character, not a hardcore adventurer dreaming of Saharan tracks.

The engine is at the heart of the matter. The 90° V-twin of 1042 cm³ — liquid-cooled, unlike the old air-cooled 8-valve block — sends 115 horsepower at 8800 rpm and 104.9 Nm at 6750 rpm. These figures remain reasonable compared to a BMW R 1300 GS or a Ducati Multistrada V4, but the Guzzi V-twin has never claimed to play in the same league as the overpowered Austrians or Italians. What matters here is the availability of torque at low rpm and the characteristic sound that the offset cylinders contribute to forging. The weight of 246 kg fully fueled remains within the standard for the category, with a 830 mm seat height that will not suit short riders without specific preparation.
The PFF — Piaggio Fast Forward — version adds a technological layer that Guzzi had never dared to cross. Two radar sensors, one integrated forward and the other under the rear light, feed three distinct systems. FCW monitors what’s happening in front and warns of a collision risk via an on-screen alert. BLIS scans the blind spots over a rear area of 30 meters, signaling any presence via the mirrors. LCA completes the picture by detecting conflicts during lane changes. As an option, the adaptive cruise control FCC manages deceleration via engine braking according to traffic. The distinction with the BMW system is important: the Stelvio informs, it does not intervene on braking itself. It’s a philosophical choice, not a shortcoming.

The onboard electronics don’t stop there. Five riding modes — Sport, Street, Turismo, Pioggia, Off-Road — allow modulation of traction control on four levels, choosing from three engine maps, and adjusting cornering ABS and engine braking. The central 5-inch color TFT screen centralizes all of this with correct readability. Full LED lighting, the quickshifter, a USB socket, and directional turn lights are part of the standard equipment. Smartphone pairing, heated grips, a center stand, and panniers remain optional, which puts the displayed price of 17,350 euros into perspective — an addition that can quickly rise for a truly complete configuration.

Facing a R 1300 GS or a Tiger 1200, the Stelvio PFF is not the most powerful or most versatile motorcycle on paper. But it stands out with what neither BMW nor Triumph can claim: a mechanically immediately recognizable identity, that transverse V which vibrates in the hands and reminds you with every kilometer that you are riding a motorcycle built with a rare conviction. The experienced touring rider who seeks to get off the beaten path of the segment, without abandoning modern technology, will find in this Stelvio a sincere proposition. The beginner, on the other hand, will pass by: 246 kg and 115 horsepower to manage via a high seat, that’s not something you improvise.
