Overview

The HM 950 benefited from Euro5 in mid-2021 to revise its color scheme and gearbox. The modifications are the same as those carried out on the Monster and the SuperSport: the drum for changing gears rotates on bearings, to facilitate engagement of neutral and more precise locking. All the better, as the SP will be the most heavily used in the family.

Let’s be clear: with the Hypermotard 950 SP, the fooling around is over! We move on to the BIG fun... while mixing in the seriousness of a good dose of riding. A more sporty and better-equipped version, this supermotard in the Ducati style places itself a clear notch above in terms of dynamic performance. It needs to break into a slide, it likes that.

The HMs have been treated to a nice update by becoming 950 (a twin engine slightly more powerful, reshaped silhouette, under-seat exhaust, general weight reduction, recalibrated ergonomics, new frame, color TFT screen), it is only right that its more performant version is based on this. It has been almost 10 years since there have been SPs in this family, since the 1100 Evo; there’s no question of letting the crucible cool.

Stir gently to make it tremble. This is the feeling we will savor first with the traditional "Ducati Corse" livery. The sporty shivers will be confirmed at the sight of the Öhlins suspensions. Quality tools for a more qualitative connection to the ground and increased efficiency. The inverted fork has gone from 50 mm in diameter on the 939 SP to 48 mm on the 950 SP. It is adjustable in all directions, as is the mono-shock absorber from the same manufacturer. An increased stroke (+15 mm front / + 25 mm rear) offers more ground clearance, even more bleeding lean angles (3° additional, i.e. 47°) but a higher seat. The saddle culminates at 890 mm, not far from the value of an enduro machine and higher than that of a trail like the latest 700 Ténéré.

Here, everything that transmits energy from the machine to the ground has been improved. The Swedish touch is one of the cornerstones of this optimization, to which are added lighter forged Marchesini rims and Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires. A little weight has been gained here and there. With the aforementioned peripherals and the front mudguard and distribution belt covers made of carbon. Result: the 950 SP weighs 2 kg less than the standard version, and 3 kg less than the 939 it replaces.

Same brakes, same dose of power and same electronics between the 950 and the SP. With one detail: the Up&Down shifter is installed as standard. To mark the occasion, we would have liked a few extra horsepower or racing brake calipers, like the M50s. Let’s not grumble too much, there’s already plenty to do with the 114 horsepower from the 937 cm3, the exciting chassis and the need for onboard assistance. Always well supplied with safety equipment at Ducati with cornering ABS, three riding modes, traction control and anti-wheeling supervised by a 6-axis inertial unit. A DRL visual signature in the headlight and a USB socket complete the tech endowment.

No need to dwell on the price, we know it’s going to sting. It’s the price of big toys for adults. The Hypermotard is a perfect illustration. Nervous, fun, formidable in the twisties and gripping as possible, the machine is still aimed at a particular clientele but will give many people the desire to seriously have fun.
