Overview
Imagine a supermotard that has undergone intensive training at the Ducati Corse Academy, with Öhlins suspension all around and forged Marchesini rims to finish the job. That's exactly what the Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP offers in its 2021 version, dated 2022 in dealerships, recognizable by its new color scheme and a gearbox whose drum now rotates on bearings. This discreet detail, borrowed from the Monster and the SuperSport, nevertheless changes the game on a daily basis: neutral point is found without hesitation, gear changes click with a new precision. On a machine as demanding as this, it's not a luxury.

The 937 cm3 V-twin develops 114 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 96 Nm of torque at 7,250 rpm, figures close to the standard version, but the SP doesn't play in the same category. What really distinguishes this version is the quality of the ground connection. The fully adjustable Öhlins suspension, 48 mm inverted fork and progressive linkage mono-shock on an asymmetrical aluminum swingarm, work with an increased stroke of 15 mm at the front and 25 mm at the rear. Direct result on the geometry: three degrees of angle, or 47° of possible inclination. For reference, an adventure bike like the Ténéré 701 doesn't even dream of it at night. Ground clearance follows, and lean angles become frankly bleeding.
The Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP technical specifications also mention a consistent weight reduction. Forged Marchesini rims, the front mudguard and the carbon belt covers allow displaying 176 kg dry, or two kilos less than the 950 standard and three less than the 939 SP it replaces. With a full tank, we reach 198 kg for a 14.5-liter tank, which gives a correct range given a consumption announced at 5.1 l/100 km. Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires in 120/70 and 175/55 on 17-inch rims complete the package, a tire typically oriented towards track or very fast corners, to be handled with respect in cold weather.
The electronics do not disappoint. Cornering ABS, traction control, anti-wheeling and three riding modes are supervised by a six-axis inertial unit. The bidirectional quickshifter is standard equipment, where the standard version makes it optional. We will simply regret the absence of racing brake calipers, such as Brembo M50, to match the sporty positioning. The floating double discs with radial four-piston calipers brake effectively, but on a machine sold for 16,890 euros, we could have pushed the slider a little further. It's the only point where the equipment/price ratio leaves a slight disappointment.
Ultimately, the Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP is aimed at a specific profile: someone who rides, who knows what a compression adjustment is, and who is looking for an urban machine capable of transforming into a track tool on the weekend. Beginners and short riders, who are not spared by the 870 mm saddle, will look elsewhere, perhaps towards a standard version or a configuration restricted for the A2 license. For others, those who search on forums for a used Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP or compare the Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP price with its rivals like the KTM 890 Duke R or the Husqvarna Supermoto 701, the answer is simple: there aren't many machines that offer this level of versatility, this frame trellis steel vivacity, and this Desmodue character so raw at this starting point. Painful for the wallet, enjoyable for everything else.
