Overview
Imagine a competition supermotard that has swallowed the genes of a pure-bred Italian sportbike, refined its silhouette at a Bolognese coachbuilder, and then decided to live on the permanent edge of reason. That’s pretty much what the Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP represents in the landscape of high-sided 17-inch wheels. Not a machine for everyone, and it proudly claims as much.

The base is the 937 cm3 V-twin engine with a 13.3:1 compression ratio, an engine designed to deliver 114 horsepower at 9000 rpm and 96 Nm of torque at 7250 rpm with a frankness that leaves no ambiguity about its intentions. For the 2022 Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP, Ducati took advantage of the Euro 5 compliance to revise the gearbox drum, now mounted on bearings. The concrete result: the neutral point is better, the gears engage with greater precision under load. A detail that counts when attacking hard in chainings. The bidirectional quickshifter is standard equipment, which is logical given the machine’s vocation.
What really distinguishes the SP from the standard version is the chassis equipment. The 48 mm Öhlins inverted fork, fully adjustable, works in concert with a mono-shock absorber from the same Swedish brand, also adjustable in all its parameters. The stroke has been increased compared to the previous 939 SP, which offers more ground clearance and allows angles approaching 47 degrees. Direct consequence: the saddle points at 890 mm, a height that exceeds that of a trail like the Ténéré 700 and approaches enduro territory. Shorter riders will need to anticipate. Forged Marchesini rims reduce unsprung masses, Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires complete the picture. Combined with the front mudguard and carbon distribution covers, the Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP dry weight announced descends to 176 kg, or 198 kg fully fueled for 14.5 liters of fuel. Two kilos less than the 950 standard, three less than the 939 it replaces.
The electronics do not disappoint. The 6-axis inertial unit supervises cornering ABS, traction control and anti-wheeling through three riding modes. For a machine as communicative in the air, it’s useful, even if the experienced rider will be tempted to play with the settings. Compare with a KTM 890 SMR or a Husqvarna Supermoto 701: the Ducati clearly plays in a different price category, with a corresponding technical sophistication. Some will regret the absence of series Brembo M50 calipers at this price level, a legitimate argument.
Justly, the Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP price is set at 17,290 euros. This is the price of machines with a strong character, those that do not seek to please everyone. The target clientele knows it: experienced riders who want a machine designed for winding roads and the circuit, wheeling enthusiasts, fans of raw sensations wrapped in high-end equipment. For someone looking for their first large displacement motorcycle, the Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP A2 does not exist in this configuration, and that is no coincidence. This motorcycle demands respect and a certain experience to extract the best from it without ending up in the ditch.
On the open road, the announced 238 km/h top speed remains anecdotal compared to what the machine provides in the first 120 km/h. It is there, in this range of daily use, that the L-twin expresses its personality with the most frankness. A fuel consumption of 5.1 liters per 100 km for a machine of this temperament remains honest. The Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP remains a reference in its category, imperfect in a few points, but consistent in its proposition: a lot of fun, few compromises.
