Overview

When Aprilia decides to revive a category, it doesn’s do so halfway. The road supermotard has never been a mass market in France, but the brand from Noale has always known how to cultivate a stubborn, almost militant presence there. The Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 model year 2020 fits into this logic: less a revolution than a serious refinement, with an engine that gains substance where it really counts.

Aprilia Dorsoduro 900

The 896 cm3 V-twin engine is directly derived from the Shiver 900, and Italian engineers didn't hesitate on the method. The bore remains at 92 mm, but the stroke goes from 56.4 to 67.4 mm, which profoundly transforms the engine's character. Torque climbs to 90 Nm available at 6500 rpm, an increase of nearly 9% compared to the old 750. The 95 horsepower peaks at 8750 rpm, and although the power increase seems modest on paper, it's the availability of torque across the range that changes the game on a daily basis. On the road, you no longer seek out high revs; the twin pulls freely and consistently. A2 compatibility is also planned, with a 35 kW restrictor that opens this supermotard to recent license holders, seriously expanding its potential audience.

Electronics constitute the other focus of this evolution. Three-level switchable traction control, three engine maps, a revised and 550 grams lighter ride-by-wire throttle, a more powerful Marelli 7SM ECU, and standard ABS. The Sport map delivers unfiltered response for those who want to play with lean angles, the Touring map softens the character for kilometers devoured without fighting the right-hand grip, and the Rain map tames the eagerness when the asphalt is wet. A 4.3-inch TFT screen complements the dashboard, with smartphone connectivity as an option. In this respect, the Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 2020 technical specifications have nothing to be ashamed of compared to the Ducati Hypermotard 950, its direct competitor and main rival in this highly contested segment.

The chassis retains its mixed backbone, steel tubular trellis and aluminum side plates, a proven combination that offers rigidity and ease of maintenance. The inverted fork benefits from preload and rebound adjustment, the rear Sachs monoshock follows the same logic. Two kilos gained on the rims, the lightweight fork, the 320 mm front discs with radial four-piston calipers replace the old petal discs. At 186 kg dry weight and 212 kg fully fueled, the Dorsoduro remains within a reasonable range for its category, even if the 870 mm seat height naturally selects taller riders. The 12-liter tank, coupled with predictable fuel consumption of under 6 liters on the road, provides acceptable range without restricting rides.

At €9,499, the Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 price positions itself in the high average of the road supermotard segment. It's more than a KTM 890 Duke, slightly less than a Hypermotard 950. The target audience is clearly that of the experienced rider looking for a nervous, versatile tool, capable of chaining tight turns with enthusiasm while devouring kilometers without martyrizing the back. Fans of the Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 used model will find attractive-priced examples on a still well-supplied secondary market. Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 reliability does not pose a major problem based on user feedback, the engine having been well-seasoned since its first appearances. The exhaust remains a point on which many buyers quickly invest, with numerous and well-referenced Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 aftermarket accessories on the market. With this 2020 model year, Aprilia delivers a sharpened machine, without fanfare but with character to spare, which ultimately quite well summarizes the identity of the brand.
