Overview

Imagine a supermotard that had spent its weekends on the track with the best parts from the Öhlins catalog, forged Marchesini rims, and Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires. That’s exactly what the Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP is: a refined, concentrated, unleashed version of an already somewhat unreasonable machine. Since the 1100 Evo, the SP variant has always represented the pinnacle of the family, and this 2024 generation is no exception.

Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP

The 90° L-twin engine with a displacement of 937 cm3 produces 114 horsepower at 9000 rpm and 96.1 Nm of torque at 7250 rpm. No major changes compared to the standard version, and that’s really the only serious criticism one could formulate. The engine is the same, as are the Brembo dual-disc brakes measuring 320 mm. Where the SP truly distinguishes itself is in everything related to the road. The 48 mm Öhlins inverted fork is adjustable in every parameter, with 185 mm of travel; the single rear shock absorber from the same Swedish manufacturer has 175 mm. This increased travel compared to the previous 939 SP offers a 47-degree steering angle, three degrees more than before. On a winding mountain road, this difference is felt in the gut before even rationalizing it.

The 890 mm seat height constitutes the main obstacle for a large portion of riders. It’s higher than a modern trail bike like the Ténéré 700, and clearly out of reach for smaller riders. The Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP is not a machine for everyone, and it proudly claims that. Its dry weight of 176 kg, reduced thanks to the carbon front fender and belt covers, places it 2 kg below the standard version. This figure may seem anecdotal, but combined with the forged Marchesini rims, you feel a machine that turns and changes direction with a disconcerting ease for its 114 horsepower.

The electronic equipment rivals what its direct competitors offer. The 6-axis inertial platform supervises cornering ABS, traction control, and anti-wheelie, distributed in three riding modes. The Up&Down shifter is standard equipment, which represents a significant argument at this level of practice. Racing brake calipers would have been appreciated to more clearly mark the break with the standard version, but the package remains consistent. The Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP technical specifications speak for themselves: top speed announced at 238 km/h, 6-speed chain transmission, 14.5-liter tank for a tight circuit-calculated range.

The price of 18,990 euros positions this SP in a category where used Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP purchases have a bright future ahead, the first generations from 2019 and 2020 allowing access to the essence of the experience for a significantly reduced budget. But the 2024 version justifies its price with refined settings and an overall consistency that the previous generations, from 2021 to 2023, have gradually built. It’s a motorcycle for a confirmed enthusiast, someone who knows the roads, who can tell the difference between an adjusted fork and a fork endured, and who accepts living with a seat height designed for days when you don’t touch both feet flat on the ground. In exchange, it promises sensations that few production machines are capable of delivering.
