Overview
The Villa d’Este elegance contest is an opportunity to see a prestigious and ultra-glamorous selection of vehicles from all eras, but especially of high standing. It is also an opportunity for BMW to showcase its future. The number of specimens presented there augured new machines. With the RR concept, the Bavarian manufacturer reveals the direction that its future sports models will take. S 100 RR, M 1000 RR… and perhaps other unprecedented RR!?
With its more tapered eyes, its less loaded wings, its more stylish Endurance fuel tank and its very airy rear section so hyper-futuristic, the Concept RR announces a clear generational shift. Just as much, if not more, than the transition between the S 1000 RR before 2019 and after. This prototype smells of the future, of significant weight reduction and power.
The machine would be perfectly suited to heating up its slicks. BMW has integrated the engine block from the current Superbike into its aluminum perimeter frame. More than 230 horsepower can be delivered by the 4-cylinder engine. As standard, the Munich-based sports cars' engine currently develops 210 horsepower in the S 1000 R and 218 hp in the M 1000 RR. There is no doubt that the engine specialists will add a scoop for the next generation; as the Concept RR subtly shows.
The advantage of a concept bike is the freedom granted to creators. They enjoyed themselves with the RR logo under the seat serving as a rear light or the pads on the rear section suggesting future turn signals. It is also an opportunity to install a host of beautiful parts, such as Öhlins suspension, a carbon fiber fairing and swingarm, Brembo GP4-SBK brake calipers, an adjustable swingarm pivot and electronics taken from the WSBK machine – engine management, traction control, shifter, engine brake, highly configurable riding aids, etc. Elements that will not be found on a production model but that make you dream.
The RR concept cuts a notch in the curtain covering the next generation of BMW. Galvanized by the performances of Foray and Razgatlioglu, German sports cars seem to want to take the lead on their performance. This styling exercise is there to heat up our adrenaline.
