Rounding a winding mountain pass, the little orange rider asked in amazement, "Great R, you have huge Brembo monoblock radial calipers!" "To better plant insane braking maneuvers, my child," replied the KTM 990 Supermoto R. From a seat height of 875 mm, the Katoche with its hyper-clash colors was impatiently waiting to devour terrified virolos. "Great R, you have lightweight wheels!" "Even more than those of my standard SM sister; it's to better change angle, my child." "Great R, you have a big twin!" "With more than 115 horsepower; it's to better stick to the ground the young foxes, my child." "Great R, you have…"- "Hey! Are you going to stop bothering me with your buttered toast?!? Let's ride, yes?"
Less reassured but already excited by the vigor of the 990 SMR, the little orange rider understood the delicate invitation to take the controls of this racing-type Supermoto. It must be said that this Katoche is nothing like a little old lady with thin soups and a tender gaze. Its very trashy look (orange frame, white bodywork, touches of black and carbon, fierce look), its unvirtuous twin, its improved suspensions and more finesse at the seat and tank level make this machine a supermotard, a tool for winding roads. Announced at less than 190 kg, the SMR gains a few kilos on the SM, but it is mainly on the more incisive chassis that the little orange rider will feel the difference and the more eloquent liveliness of the bike. Even more sport for this already very sporty machine, which has not finished astonishing our little orange rider.
Mid-2012, it's a period of austerity for the SMR, making it much more accessible, safer but less noble. By recovering the ABS Bosch 9M+ and displaying almost €1,500 less, the tight-track plow becomes very attractive. What is gained in the wallet is lost on the equipment. The calipers are no longer monoblock, the once-forged rims are now cast, the surface treatment on the fork tubes is finished, a few less carbon parts, and 3 kilos more on the scale.
