Overview
When China decides to play the style card rather than the low-price card, the result is something as divisive as the Zontes 125 Roadster R. This is far from the generic roadster with smoothed-out bodywork designed to please everyone. Here, edges are sharp, volumes clash, and the front light cluster stares at the world with an almost aggressive intensity. It's geometric, it's deliberate, and it's clearly unapologetic. Some will find it overdone; others will finally see a 125 that doesn't look like every other bike in the parking lot. It's hard to remain indifferent, which is already an achievement in a segment where mediocrity reigns supreme.

Beneath this sharp-edged bodywork, Zontes had the good sense not to cut corners on the mechanics. The liquid-cooled 124 cc single-cylinder produces 14.6 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 13.7 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm — figures that place it honestly in the upper-middle of the category. The short bore of 52 mm paired with a long stroke of 58 mm gives it a character that favors torque over raw punch, which suits urban and suburban use well. The 6-speed gearbox shifts cleanly, and the slipper clutch is a rare touch at this price point. The whole package weighs 150 kg fully fuelled, which remains reasonable, and can reach a top speed of 120 km/h. This isn't a thrill machine, but nobody buys a 125 for that.
The equipment, on the other hand, is where the Zontes catches everyone off guard. For €3,790, keyless ignition, full LED lighting, backlit switchgear, a USB port, a 47 mm upside-down fork, and an aluminum swingarm all come as standard. Since 2023, a TFT screen completes the package. Among European or Japanese rivals positioned at a comparable price, such a list of standard features simply doesn't exist. The Yamaha MT-125 and the Honda CB125R have the reputation and proven reliability, but they don't offer as much at a similar price point. Zontes is clearly playing on this ground, and the argument is a strong one.

The flip side concerns riders over six feet tall. The 785 mm seat height remains accessible, agility in the city is genuine, but the overall ergonomics begin to betray the bike's compact dimensions beyond a certain height. This isn't a fault specific to Zontes — it's the structural constraint of the entire 125 category. For the audience this bike naturally targets, namely new A1 licence holders and urban riders looking for a stylish, well-equipped two-wheeler, the question hardly arises. The bike is easy to get to grips with, the handling is competent, and the 12.5-litre tank allows back-to-back journeys without stopping every hour.

The verdict is straightforward. The Zontes 125 Roadster R isn't perfect, but it offers an equipment-to-price ratio that its rivals struggle to match. The design divides opinion, the brand still lacks the long-term reliability track record, and the service network remains thinner than a Japanese dealer network. But the sales figures speak for themselves, consistently placing it among the top-selling 125s registered in France. That commercial success is no accident. It rests on a concrete, visible, and coherent offer for a public that wants character without breaking the bank.
