Overview
Since its creation, the GSX-S125 has only seen changes in its color schemes and requirements related to regulations. The latest of these is Euro5+, which Suzuki is offering this little roadster to ensure it remains in the battle of the small bikes. But what does the little GSX-S think when it sees its 950 and 1000 big brothers?
Adrenaline-fueled questions dominate, as aggressive roadsters have taken over. With chassis and engines borrowed from the most radical sportbikes, these machines don't hold back. The offer is plentiful in the mid and high displacement categories. However, motorcycles of this caliber in 125cc are not common. Is this due to their modest power? But things have been changing recently.
With its MT-125, Yamaha offered something far more enticing than its YBR. KTM provoked emotions with its Duke 125. The Tuono 125 is back. Kawasaki has just entered the scene with the Z 125. And Suzuki intends to mark its presence in this niche. Especially since it has a strong appellation in stock: GSX-S. The 1000 recently tipped Suzuki into the dark side of large streetfighters, the 950 is arriving to devour a share of the juicy mid-displacement market, and the 125 GSX-S is now coming to complete the offer for the 1/8th-liter crowd.
To design this little powerhouse, the manufacturer started with the GSX-R 125. The frame, components, and engine are retained, then the bodywork is adapted. And that's where the first surprise comes in. With such a name, one might expect a GSX-S750 in miniature. Not at all. The GSX-S 125 has its own identity, hooked into the lower fairing, edgy on the shoulders, and intriguing in its appearance. Opinions may be divided regarding this face, globular and chubby.
Within its steel square-tube chassis, Suzuki has installed the 124.4 cc engine from the mini-sportive. Equipped with a 32 mm injection, double ACT, 4 valves, and liquid cooling, this single-cylinder engine aims to deliver its legal 15 hp with outstanding acceleration performance. The overall weight of the motorcycle should help in this exercise. The GSX-S 125 weighs 135 kilograms at the scales, 7 units more than the slender Duke 125 and CBF 125, but 3 less than the MT-125.
Petal brake discs, 10-spoke wheels, ABS, and a digital dashboard are also borrowed from the GSX-R. On the other hand, the high handlebar (10 cm taller than on the Gex) and one of the lowest saddles in the category should ensure dynamic riding with a much greater level of comfort than on the sportive. On the other hand, Suzuki has not transposed its keyless start system. A pity. Instead, we get an obturator system at the contactor... we're still looking for the use of this thing. Starting seems to be a major concern for Suzuki, which installs its Easy Start everywhere, and thus on the GSX-S 125. A press, and it turns on its own until the engine is launched. 2020 brought it slight modifications, with the presence of a warning light on the right handlebar and a black display for the dashboard.
Suzuki is pursuing a segment it hasn't known since the 125 GN. Its GSX-S 125 is light-years away from its ancestor. It will have to tackle already well-established and confident competitors. Rebellious, it wants to rely on its mini-GSX-R internals to make a name for itself and a position. A good price should help all of this.
