Overview
When Zontes arrived in Europe, many scoffed. Yet another Chinese manufacturer copying, undercutting, destined to vanish within three years. Except the 125 Roadster R had the audacity to stick around, sell well, and steadily climb to the top of the sales charts. Hard to keep scoffing now.

The design does its job from first glance. Never one for half-measures, the Roadster R cuts sharp: prominent ridges, chiseled angles, an exhaust with a menacing attitude, LED headlights with an almost aggressive stare. It feels like something off an industrial design table rather than a motorcycle factory floor. Divisive, naturally. Some will find the whole package overwrought, too showy. But in a 125cc category that too often plays it safe to the point of tedium, the Zontes plants a silhouette you recognize from a distance — and that alone is a commercial victory in its own right.
Beneath that sculpted bodywork, the engine follows the same logic of deliberate seriousness. The 124cc single-cylinder produces 14.6 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 13.7 Nm of torque available at 7,000 rpm, delivered through a well-spaced 6-speed gearbox. Liquid cooling, fuel injection, four valves per cylinder, a compression ratio of 12.5:1, a short bore of 52 mm with a 58 mm stroke: nothing exceptional on paper, but nothing to be ashamed of either. The whole package weighs 150 kg fully fueled with a claimed top speed of 120 km/h, placing it exactly where you'd expect a serious urban 125 to land. Against a Honda CB125R or a Yamaha MT-125, it holds its ground without apology.

What really gets people talking is the onboard equipment. At €3,290, the spec sheet is disarming: keyless start and locking, USB and 12V outlets, backlit switchgear, lever guards, aluminum swingarm, slipper clutch, and above all a 47 mm inverted fork — a component rarely seen at this price point. A TFT display arrived on 2023 models. The finish follows suit, without claiming the refinement of a premium Japanese machine, but without the sloppiness one might have feared. On this front, Zontes scores points that its direct competitors struggle to contest.

The main reservation concerns the imposing proportions: with a 785 mm seat height and a compact format, riders over 6'1" should look elsewhere. For everyone else, the accessible seat height and urban agility make this bike an effective daily companion. It clearly targets new A1 license holders, riders returning after a long break, or city dwellers who want character without paying the price of a larger displacement. This is not a motorcycle trying to impress on a track; it's a motorcycle trying to win over riders in the real world — and it does so rather well.
