Overview
When you first spot a Zontes in traffic, you wonder whether a designer cut metal with a box cutter and assembled the pieces at random. The 125 Roadster R breaks radically from the smooth, rounded roadsters that populate the segment. Here, everything is angular, taut, almost aggressive. The front light cluster stares back at you with a gaze that hovers somewhere between science fiction and predatory insect. Some will look away. Others, on the contrary, will be captivated. This polarization is precisely what Zontes is after — a Chinese brand that has understood visibility is worth its weight in gold in a 125 segment cluttered with lukewarm offerings.

Beneath this divisive bodywork, the 124 cc single-cylinder is a contemporary and serious engine. Four valves, liquid cooling, electronic fuel injection, a compression ratio of 12.5:1 with a 52 mm bore and 58 mm stroke. Power peaks at 14.6 horsepower at 9,000 rpm, torque at 13.7 Nm at 7,000 rpm. These figures are in line with the category norm — neither disappointing nor revolutionary. The 6-speed gearbox allows the rev range to be used properly, and the claimed top speed of 120 km/h is consistent with the laws of physics and the machine's proportions. There is no attempt here to reinvent the internal combustion engine, simply to offer a reliable, Euro 5-compliant unit.
What truly sets the Zontes apart from its direct rivals is its level of equipment. For €3,790, you receive a 47 mm inverted fork, an aluminium swingarm, keyless start, full LED lighting, a slipper clutch, backlit switchgear, and a USB port. From 2023, a TFT screen completes the package. Place a Honda CB125R or a Yamaha MT-125 side by side and compare the equipment lists at an equivalent price point. The exercise is enlightening. Japanese manufacturers sell their heritage and their dealer network. Zontes sells substance.

That said, it pays to keep your feet on the footpegs. The Roadster R weighs 150 kg fully fuelled, which remains reasonable for the category, and the seat height comes in at 785 mm, making it approachable for average-sized riders. Riders above 1.85 m, however, may feel cramped. This is not a criticism specific to this model — it is the structural reality of compact small-displacement machines. The 12.5-litre tank provides decent range on a motorcycle designed primarily for city riding and back roads.

The Zontes 125 Roadster R is clearly aimed at young A1 licence holders who refuse to ride something ordinary, and at returning riders who want a well-equipped tool without breaking the bank. The Chinese manufacturer's bet is coherent and well executed. This is not a perfect motorcycle, but it is an honest one — endowed with genuine visual character and an equipment-to-price ratio that is hard to argue with. French sales figures consistently bear this out.
