Overview
When searching for reviews of the Honda 125 Varadero XLV since its debut in 2001, you always find the same observation: this machine has established itself without a serious competitor in the road trail segment in 125cc. Those who rode the 2005 and 2007 versions unanimously recognize the quality of construction and the seriousness of the Honda project, even if debates often revolved around the weight. With this 2011 model year, the XLV takes a concrete step: PGM-FI injection is introduced, and the entire design receives a welcome refresh.

The visual result is well-executed. Honda has borrowed stylistic codes from its own range, with optics similar to the CBR 125 and a silhouette that recalls the Transalp 650 in miniature, this mixture of curves and taut lines that gives character without falling into excess. The complete dashboard, the well-designed lights, the overall finish: it is difficult not to recognize the work. At 4,990 euros, the Varadero plays in the big leagues, and it knows it.
Under the fairing, the 90-degree L-twin engine with a displacement of 124.7 cc remains the centerpiece. With 15 horsepower available at 11,000 rpm and a torque of 9.8 Nm at 9,500 rpm, the figures are honest for the displacement. Injection replaces the carburetor without touching the rest of the mechanics, and that is the right decision: the engine gains cleanliness, meets Euro 3 standards, and should consume a little less on a mixed journey. The 16.8-liter tank offers reasonable range, which is important on a machine designed to swallow up the kilometers. The 5-speed gearbox does the job cleanly, and the chain remains the expected mode of transmission in this category.
The point of friction is well known to everyone who has followed the evolution of the Varadero since its early years. At 169 kg fully fueled, this 125 weighs as much as some 400cc machines. You have to rev it to extract what the little twin has in its belly, and the maximum speed of 115 km/h imposes its limits on the highway. The 800 mm seat remains accessible to most builds, but maneuvering in the parking lot requires a little practice. It is not a deal-breaker; it is simply the reality of a machine designed for the road, not for urban gymkhanas.

The interest of the Varadero lies precisely in this assumed positioning of a compact GT for A1 license holders. Honda offers a catalog of accessories to push the concept to the limit: top case, heated grips, center stand, engine guard. All these elements transform the XLV into a small touring machine capable of handling a weekend away from home without major compromise. The target audience is clearly those who want to ride fast without waiting for majority or who are discovering motorcycles with the ambition of traveling from the first summer. For this profile, and despite its high price, the 125 Varadero remains a reference without a direct rival in this niche.
