Overview

Since Honda shelved the Varadero 125, the accessible road trail with an A1 license has become an orphaned segment, colonized by brands that many motorcyclists still struggle to identify. Orcal, Rieju, Benelli, Zontes: these names circulate in forums but remain discreet in dealerships. It is precisely in this void that the Montana XR1 Evo attempts to establish itself, backed by Macbor, a Spanish brand with more experience than it is given credit for.

Macbor Montana XR1 125 evo

The "Evo" suffix is not a marketing gimmick. The Montana has been on the Iberian market since 2017, underwent a major overhaul in 2023, then a Euro5+ upgrade before crossing the Pyrenees. It is therefore not a rushed prototype on the French market, but a machine that has matured. Its DNA is also common with the Zongshen Cyclone RX1, the Chinese giant with which Macbor negotiated a collaboration; the silhouette, suspension settings, and injection mapping are specific to the Montana, which prevents it from being a simple badge swap.

Under the 14-liter tank beats a 124 cc, four-stroke, liquid-cooled, double overhead camshaft, four-valve-per-cylinder single-cylinder engine. Compression climbs to 12:1, the bore measures 58 mm for a stroke of 47 mm, giving it a square character oriented towards revs rather than low-end torque. The engine produces 14.9 horsepower at 9,500 rpm and 10.8 Nm at 7,500 rpm, figures in the high average of the segment. The six-speed gearbox allows you to maintain the legal 110 km/h without brutalizing the mechanics. Where the shoe pinches is the weight: 179 kg fully fueled, it's heavy for a 125. However, it should be specified that this figure includes the three fitted suitcases, a detail that changes everything in the analysis.

Because the real value proposition of the Montana is its standard equipment. Side cases, top case, front and rear crash bars, center stand, engine guard, spoked wheels, 5-inch color TFT screen, USB socket, switchable ABS and slip control: all of this for 3,799 euros. Faced with a QJ Motor SRT 125 DX or Rieju's Aventura, the Montana plays in a different category in terms of equipment. The 37 mm inverted fork with 140 mm of travel and the adjustable preload rear mono-shock complete a technical picture that few rivals can match at this price. The brakes, a 265 mm front disc pinched by a two-piston caliper and a 240 mm rear disc with a single-piston, do the job without distinction. ABS offers three modes: two-channel, disconnected at the rear only, or completely deactivated, which leaves a margin of appreciable customization.

The target driver profile is clearly the young A1 license holder, or the adult wishing to travel without a specific motorcycle license, who wants to go away for the weekend without tinkering with his motorcycle for two hours before departure. On this angle, the Montana is formidable. Its limits are known: the original CST tires are not the best, the limited ground clearance discourages any forest path aspirations, and the single-cylinder, already stressed solo, will have to work hard when loaded with a passenger. These reservations aside, Macbor has managed to place a mature, well-bred and frankly well-equipped machine in a segment where no one has yet managed to establish themselves permanently. The opportunity is there; it remains to be seen whether the French distribution will be up to the ambition of the product.
