Overview
Do you remember the era when Japanese customs were timid copies of Harley Davidsons? The Yamaha XVS 1100 Dragstar Classic, launched in 2004, marks a turning point. Yamaha had finally digested American style to offer a machine with its own character, far from simple imitation. This motorcycle is not an aesthetic revolution; it follows in the footsteps of the Virago, but with a more assertive, more "low rider" attitude. It complements a range already rich, with the Wildstar, more sporty, or the Royalstar, more luxurious, but it finds its place thanks to a more accessible and more road-friendly approach.

The heart of the machine is this V-twin 1063 cc engine, taken and improved from the Virago 1100. With 62 horsepower at 7570 rpm, we're not talking about a rocket, but the torque of 85 Nm available from 2500 rpm is the main argument. It's an engine that pulls without straining, propelling this 261 kg dry custom with quiet authority. On the road, it proves pleasant and responds when called upon, even if its announced top speed of 170 km/h remains more of a theoretical figure than a daily objective. For a 2004 or 2005 model found today on the used market, this engine offers robust reliability and simple but effective sensations.
The real surprise, and the point that distinguishes this Dragstar Classic from many of its competitors, comes from the chassis. Yamaha has done remarkable work on the suspension. The 41 mm fork and the mono-shock offer comfort worthy of a touring bike, without sacrificing handling. You can really enjoy yourself in the curves, adopt a more muscular riding style, because the bike allows it and encourages it. The braking, with its two front discs, is of the same caliber: effective and proportionate to the weight and performance. It's a custom that likes to play, and that's something we love.
But not everything is rosy, as is often the case on these machines where style takes precedence. The five-speed gearbox, especially in first gear, is not a model of silence and can grind a bit. The passenger, with their often sacrificial seat on customs, will quickly get upset if the road lengthens. The 17-liter tank imposes regular stops, and the weight, even well controlled, remains a constant presence. The new price of 9500 euros was competitive against a Harley-Davidson Sportster, but today, on the used market, the value of a Yamaha XVS 1100 Dragstar Classic depends mainly on its condition and history.
This machine is aimed at the touring rider who wants style without complications, the beginner customizer looking for a reliable and easy-to-live-with base, or even the moderate track rider who wants an original and capable motorcycle. It is not the most powerful, nor the lightest, but it offers a rare balance between cruiser attitude and a nearly touring dynamic. For those looking for a solid and pleasant opportunity in the world of Japanese customs, this Dragstar remains a very serious proposition.
