Overview
Motorcycle: Yamaha XVS 1100 DRAGSTAR Classic (2001)

What if a motorcycle could lie? The Dragstar Classic, especially the 2004 or 2005 versions often found secondhand, is a perfect example. It adopts the attitude of an American low rider, with that stretched silhouette and high handlebars, but its heart is Japanese, pragmatic, and almost too civilized. Yamaha took the old twin from the Virago 1100, gave it new cylinders and pistons, and housed it in a frame that breathes custom, but without the excesses.
The result is a machine of 1063 cc delivering 62 horsepower, a modest power output that betrays its orientation: the pleasure is in the torque, available from 2500 rpm, and in cruising, not in frenzy. With 261 kg dry weight and a seat height of 690 mm, it asserts its presence without being intimidating. It's a custom for those who want style without the constraints of a Harley, for road trippers who prefer long curves to tight turns.
On the road, the surprise comes from the chassis. The double cradle frame and 41 mm fork offer handling that defies the standards of cruisers of the time. The suspension does a remarkable job, absorbing bumps without ever becoming soft. The braking, with its two front discs, is effective and even allows for a bit of play. You can have fun, as the original description says, but within a very restrained framework. The five-speed gearbox and shaft drive ensure trouble-free propulsion, even if first gear can be a bit vocal, a small mechanical betrayal in this cool-looking package.
The real problem, and this is typical of these machines, is passenger comfort. Rear seat space is often a compromise on these customs, and here, it is meager. For a long journey, your companion is likely to express their discontent. The 17-liter tank and top speed of around 170 km/h also define the limits of its territory: it's a motorcycle for national roads, landscapes, not for exploits.
In conclusion, the XVS 1100 Dragstar Classic is an honest proposition. It doesn't claim to be the most powerful or the most radical. It offers a credible and well-finished alternative in the world of cruisers, with a price, especially secondhand, that can be very attractive. It appeals to those who want a Yamaha custom with the assurance of Japanese reliability and a bit of hidden dynamism beneath the chrome. It's a stylish road companion, but one that can also, occasionally, remind you that beneath its peaceful appearance, it has a chassis with something to say.
