Overview

Can a 261 kg dry weight motorcycle, powered by a V-twin producing 62 horsepower, really deliver enjoyment? The Yamaha XVS 1100 Dragstar Classic, particularly in its 2004 or 2005 versions, answers with a certain arrogance. This machine is not simply an evolution of the Virago; it's a change of philosophy. Yamaha then had a well-stocked custom range, but the Dragstar Classic, with its longer mudguard, wider forks, and more relaxed stance, quickly became the epicenter of the family. It remained in the catalog longer than its standard version, and on the used market today, it represents a safe bet for those seeking an authentic Japanese custom.

Yamaha XVS 1100 DRAGSTAR Classic

The engine is well-known, a 1063 cm3 V-twin derived from the Virago 1100, but reworked. With 85.3 Nm of torque available from 2500 rpm, you shouldn't expect an explosion of power. The modest compression ratio of 8.3:1 and the 62 hp at 7570 rpm speak of an engine built for suppleness and reliability, not for records. It reaches approximately 170 km/h, which is sufficient for all road use. This twin is pleasant; it responds without haste and offers a wide usable powerband. The five-speed gearbox, coupled with shaft drive, ensures solid propulsion, even if first gear can be a little noisy, a small weakness accepted on these machines.

The real surprise comes from the chassis. For a custom of this mass, the handling is excellent. The 41 mm telescopic fork and the single shock absorber do a remarkable job, absorbing imperfections without sacrificing stability. The braking system, with two front discs and one rear disc, is effective and even allows for a bit of dynamic riding. You don't fight the motorcycle; you accompany it. The seat height of 690 mm makes the machine accessible, and its weight, which is well-felt, is easily mastered from the first few laps. It's a custom that, unlike many, isn't afraid of curves.

For whom? The touring rider who wants a silent and comfortable presence, the urban rider who appreciates its low-rider look and ease of use, or even the beginner looking for a first large but docile custom. Its 17-liter fuel tank offers correct range, and its initial price of 9500 euros was already reasonable. On today's used market, a 2004 or 2005 Yamaha XVS 1100 Dragstar Classic represents excellent value for money. The passenger, however, may quickly find their place uncomfortable on this secondary seat often neglected by custom manufacturers.

It’s not the most powerful, nor the lightest, but it possesses a disarming charm and a rare versatility in the cruiser world. Between the more sporty Wildstar and the more luxurious Royalstar, the Dragstar Classic occupies this middle ground: honest mechanics, a competent chassis, and aesthetics that don’t age. It’s a motorcycle that proves that pleasure is not measured solely in numbers, but in consistent sensations and mechanical reliability.
