Overview

Who said a custom couldn't have a bit of soul beneath the chrome? In 2002, Yamaha retired the Virago to give birth to the XVS 1100 Dragstar Classic, and the change was more than just a polish on the tank. Here, we don't just aim to shine in the city; we also seek a thrill on country roads. With its 1063 cm3 displacement inherited from the previous model, the V-twin has been reworked from the inside, gaining reliability more than ferocity. The 62 horsepower at 7500 rpm and 85 Nm of torque available from 2500 rpm don't make this Japanese bike a stopwatch racer, but it has the ability to pull effortlessly, to offer smooth and reassuring acceleration. It’s a composed engine, which purrs more than it roars, perfect for long stretches without pretending to be a hero.

Yamaha XVS 1100 DRAGSTAR Classic

But the real surprise is that beneath this low rider liner appearance, engineers have hidden a surprisingly lively chassis. The steel double cradle frame, combined with a 41 mm fork and a single shock absorber, offers handling that is nothing to be ashamed of compared to some sport touring bikes. The suspension digests bumps with disconcerting seriousness, and the dual front disc braking system, although lacking ABS, bites with a nice progression. It’s far from the unstable and soft custom that can only turn while slowing down. This Dragstar Classic, which can now be found on the used market for very reasonable prices, even invites you to play a bit in curves, one foot on the front footpegs. That’s where its greatest talent lies: making you forget its 261 kg dry weight and imposing silhouette.

However, not everything is perfect in this world of chrome and leather. The five-speed gearbox, especially the first gear, is sometimes a little noisy, betraying gears that prefer robustness to refinement. And if you plan to carry a regular passenger, forget it. The space in the back is more symbolic than comfortable, an obvious concession to the cruiser's purist style. With its 17-liter tank, it targets the relaxed touring rider, one who prioritizes travel over pure performance. Compared to a Harley-Davidson Sportster of the time, more lively but also more rustic, the Yamaha plays the card of versatility and serenity.

Today, finding a Yamaha XVS 1100 Dragstar Classic 2004 or 2005 in good condition is an excellent deal. It’s an opportunity to acquire a reliable custom, with an indestructible engine, that offers much more than just the status of a showpiece. It will appeal to the rider who wants character without the quirks, a presence on the road without the pretension of a new price. It’s not the most powerful, nor the lightest, but it possesses this rare balance between appearance and riding comfort. An honest proposition, which has aged with a certain class.
