Overview
Ninety years. The figure deserves a moment's pause — set the helmet on the tank and reflect on what it truly represents. In 1921, while Europe was licking its wounds, Carlo Guzzi was assembling his first 499cc machine in Mandello del Lario. BMW, so often cited in these historical comparisons, didn't release its R32 until 1923. Two years behind the Italian. That detail changes little mechanically, but it says a great deal about the eagle-badged brand's legitimacy when it celebrates its platinum anniversary with the motorcycle.

The California 1100 90th Anniversary is therefore not a simple marketing exercise dressed up in exclusive paint. It carries something weightier: the awareness of a lineage. The California model itself drags forty years of history behind it, making it one of the rare modern motorcycles that can claim an original design from the 1970s still visible in its broad strokes. This limited edition embraces that fully, with a two-tone white and orange livery drawn directly from 1930s archive material, Guzzi logo included — the one with the Gothic lettering that evokes pine resin and castor oil. The brown leather seat, specific to this version, completes the scene.
But beyond the styling, the equipment on offer is generous for €16,990: panniers, windshield, auxiliary lights, chrome wire wheels, linked braking, and a numbered plate for those who are collectors at heart. Beneath the 19-liter tank, the 90-degree air-cooled V-twin develops 73 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 93.2 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm. Modest figures on paper, but Guzzi's transverse V-twin has never played in the sportbike arena. Its strength lies in that early-available torque, the maintenance-free shaft drive, and the guttural exhaust note that turns heads in every village it passes through. The five-speed gearbox does its job without overreaching, and the 263 kg dry weight demands a measure of respect at a standstill, especially with a 780 mm seat height that remains manageable.
What makes this California particularly interesting for the historian and the enthusiast alike is the context of its release. In 2012, Guzzi was preparing to move to a new California generation equipped with a liquid-cooled 1400. This large air-cooled V-twin, in its current form, was therefore reaching the end of the road. Buying this limited edition meant acquiring the swan song of an engine that had crossed four decades without compromising itself. That's no small thing. The intended customer is clearly neither the newly licensed young rider nor the track-day devotee chasing lap times: it's the well-traveled touring rider with a sense of history, who values patina over raw performance and understands that a motorcycle can tell a story beyond its power figures.
At a top speed of 185 km/h, it makes no claim to rival a BMW R18 or a Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster on modern terms. It plays a different score — older and more personal. And for the handful of buyers who put €16,990 on the table, this California will probably never be just a machine for riding.
