Overview

The 1200 Thruxton has disappeared from the catalog; it went out with a superb RS Final Edition. But the Classic range no longer has the same flavor without a powerful café racer to top it off. So Triumph turned to the Speed Twin 1200 RS to, in a way, take up the torch and proposes this Speed Twin 1200 Café Racer Edition series.

Sometimes, a delicate inspiration is all it takes to achieve a successful interpretation. Like this color choice, where English green falls in love with an aluminum gray; a union marked by gold pinstripes on the tank and matching seat cowl. Both refined, racy, and so British. A race number allows this Speed Twin Café Racer to present itself as a sporty lord. The high-quality saddle with embossed patterns follows this dynamic, while the removal of the passenger footrests invites you to continue this adventure alone.

Triumph has put them aside to reinstall them if needed. But while said passenger inclines you to this effort, you hardly listen because you are already captivated by the machined mirrors, the engine casing badges, the knee grips on the tank; and above all by the clip-on handlebars. This is where the sport begins, with the torso and arms leaning on the controls.

The Speed Twin 1200 Café Racer invites its rider to grasp the road. This driving position is far from offering the same flavor as the late Thruxton. The latter took you into the scent of English rock and wild races. Its “heir” does not share this vision: alas, as on the standard 1200 Speed Twin (and RS), the speedometer is not really in the mood of a classic English café racer. We loved the double analog speedometer on the Thruxton; you will have to appreciate the LCD / TFT combination of the Trident and Tiger here. However, this instrumentation allows step-by-step navigation and telephone connectivity, while integrating a USB-C charging socket. Another small regret is the absence of a specific top yoke. A machined and polished part, without the bridge mounting points, would have been more premium.

Under the Café Racer habit, we find all the attributes of the 1200 Speed Twin RS. We like these little stylistic effects such as the Monza cap, the mirrors at the end of the handlebars, the machining of the cooling fins and the care given to the finish as to the presentation. Offering it spoked wheels would have deliciously completed the equipment - a shame. In a more dynamic register, the technology shows electronic securities and moods with 3 Riding Modes, a Cornering ABS, a quickshifter and traction control. Above this are more exciting elements such as the Marzocchi inverted fork and the fully adjustable Öhlins shock absorbers, Brembo Stylema brakes, large 320 mm discs, very sporty tires that are the Metzeler Racetec RR K3, and this large twin-cylinder engine with the build of a rowing athlete.

A true candidate for the Oxford-Cambridge race that this 1200 HP. Its muffled and fat voice accompanies a beautiful power of 105 horsepower, generously seasoned with 112 Nm of torque. The kind of engine with a rounded, full, energetic temperament like a racehorse and not like a track excitable.

The Triumph Speed Twin 1200 Café Racer Edition will be produced in 800 units, each delivered with its certificate of authenticity. France will only receive 65 units. Lovers of beautiful English machines with a "road racing" charm can once again fall for a Triumph race machine, born of a passion for life. Not everything is classic on board but let the charm work. The price slaps you? What did you expect!?!
