Overview
Who still remembers the shockwave the first ZX-10R sent through the small world of hypersports in 2004? At the time, Kawasaki didn’t release just a motorcycle, but a knockout blow. The objective was clear: crush the competition with an unprecedented power-to-weight ratio. And the bet was kept, with an engine delivering 175 horsepower for a dry weight of only 170 kg. A declaration of war on the Yamaha R1 and the Suzuki GSX-R 1000, which were then dominating the debates. The message was clear: the era of gentleness was over.

This 998 cm3 engine, designed for WSBK from its inception, is nothing like a civilized engine. At low RPM, it growls and vibrates with an almost vintage character, reminiscent of the old ZRX models. You have to wait until 9,000 RPM for hell to be unleashed. Power then explodes with a brutality that can chill you to the bone, transforming every acceleration into a test of lucidity. Compared to the GSX-R of the time, more linear and accessible, the Kawasaki's four-cylinder engine demands respect. It’s a pilot’s machine, designed for the stopwatch, not for Sunday strolls.
This radical philosophy is felt throughout its chassis. The bike is surprisingly compact, shaped like a 600, with a riding position that bends the body without compromise. The imposing frame and massive swingarm inspire confidence, but don’t lie: the ZX-10R is a precision weapon. Its braking system, with radial calipers and 300 mm petal discs, is of breathtaking efficiency, even if the anti-dribble system can surprise by slightly destabilizing the rear during violent entries. It is comfortable in corners, agile, but becomes physically demanding as soon as you push it beyond its apparent limits.

So, who is this green fury for? Certainly not for a beginner, nor even for a touring rider seeking comfort. It’s the bike for the pure track rider, for those seeking raw sensation and absolute performance, even if it means having to tame it. Opinions on the 2005 Kawasaki ZX-10R 1000 are often mixed: brilliant on a circuit, intimidating and tiring on the road. Its price at the time, 13,499 euros, already made it a serious commitment. Today, if we wonder what the price of a 2016 or 2018 Kawasaki ZX-10R 1000 is in France, it is often to find a bit of this wild essence that has been somewhat diluted with subsequent generations. The 2004 remains a monument, a brutal reminder that pure performance has a bitter and exhilarating taste.
