Overview
When Husqvarna decided to leave motocross circuits to venture into adventure trails, no one really knew what to expect. The Swedish brand, owned by the Austrian group for years, carries a reputation built on all-terrain titles, especially in the 60s and 70s. Switching from two-stroke competition to a versatile trail bike is quite a leap. Yet, the Husqvarna Norden 901 has managed to establish its own distinct personality, separate from its cousin the KTM 890 Adventure with which it shares the mechanical platform. Same aluminum swingarm, same 889 cc water-cooled twin-cylinder engine, same 105 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 100 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. But that's where the obvious kinship ends.

Aesthetically, the Norden plays a resolutely Nordic score, austere, almost warrior-like. Where the orange KTM displays its desire for jumps and sandy slides, the Swede looks towards the fjords and muddy trails of Scandinavia. The bulging look, the angular silhouette vaguely recall the old KTM 950 and 990 Adventure, which is not a defect. The 19-liter fuel tank descends very low on either side of the frame, lowering the center of gravity and adding a certain protection from the elements. This positioning of the fuel is intelligent on paper; it partially compensates for the 217 kg when fully fueled, a Husqvarna Norden 901 weight that remains within the standard of the category without being a benchmark for lightness. The seat height of 859 mm requires reach or flexibility, and riders of average height will have to deal with that.
Mechanically, the dossier holds the road. The engine takes the revs with frankness, the six-speed gearbox with a bidirectional shifter fluidifies the changes, and the anti-dribble clutch manages abrupt throttle inputs without seeking to destabilize. The Husqvarna Norden 901 specs display an announced consumption of around 4.5 liters per 100 km, or approximately 52 miles per gallon, which, with the large tank, provides a serious range for an engaged trail bike. The maximum speed is capped at 200 km/h, sufficient for quick connections between sections of track. The onboard electronics cover classic situations: four riding modes including a customizable Explorer, traction control on ten levels, a switchable ABS at the rear in offroad mode, a cruise control, and a five-inch connected TFT screen. Yes, the cruise control is indeed present, contrary to what some still wonder.

On the running gear side, the 43 mm WP Apex inverted fork debates on 220 mm, the WP monoshock on 215 mm. These values allow for honest clearance without claiming to rival a pure enduro. The ground clearance of 252 mm places the Norden above a BMW R 1300 GS around 200 mm, equal to an Africa Twin, but far from the lightweight enduros that flirt with 330 mm and more. The Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires in 90/90-21 at the front and 150/70-18 at the rear confirm the intention: degraded roads, forest trails, and a few technical passages, but not the specials of the Dakar.

At a price of 14,949 euros, the Husqvarna Norden 901 price positions itself within a competitive range compared to the Africa Twin or the V-Strom 1050. It clearly targets the adventurous globetrotter who wants to leave the asphalt without sacrificing comfort or technology on long distances. This is not a motorcycle for beginners; the high seat and the overall size require experience. But for an intermediate to confirmed rider looking for an alternative to the German and Japanese essentials, the Swede offers a strong visual identity and a proven technical base. Opinions on the Husqvarna Norden 901 converge on this point: it keeps its promises in mixed road and trail use, without seeking to dominate everything everywhere.
