Overview
Husqvarna has been building off-road motorcycles for over sixty years. Dozens of motocross titles, a reputation built in mud and sand, a resolutely off-road DNA. So when the Swedish brand, now under Austrian ownership, decides to enter the mainstream adventure bike arena, the question naturally arises: does it have what it takes to compete with established machines like the Africa Twin or the R 1250 GS? The Husqvarna Norden 901 provides an answer that deserves attention.

Visually, the bike doesn’t seek to appeal to everyone. Its sickle-shaped design, almond-shaped headlights, and asymmetrical silhouette evoke more an expedition kit than a showroom trail bike. One thinks of the old KTM 950/990 Adventure, those raw machines that made no concessions to aesthetics. This is no coincidence: the Norden shares its origins with the KTM 890 Adventure, the two firms belonging to the same group. The aluminum swingarm is common, as are the mechanical foundations. But that’s where the resemblance ends. The KTM plays the sporty and aggressive card; the Husqvarna Norden 901 aims for a wilder territory, less track, more fjord.
The 889 cc parallel-twin engine produces 105 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 100 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. Figures close to a V-Strom 1050 or an Africa Twin 1100, without the larger displacement that reassures some. The steel chrome-molybdenum trellis frame works the engine as a stressed member, which lightens the overall structure. The dry weight is 217 kg, a reasonable weight in this category. The Husqvarna Norden 901’s contained weight is felt when getting it moving, especially in comparison to a GS that easily exceeds 240 kg. The seat height of 854 mm remains a barrier for short legs, with the possibility of adding another 20 mm in the off-road version. This is something to consider before purchasing.
The WP Apex suspension, a 43 mm inverted fork with 220 mm of travel and a 215 mm rear shock, are adjustable and come from the same stable as the best-equipped KTMs. The ground clearance of 252 mm places the Norden above a GS (approximately 200 mm) and in the same register as an Africa Twin (250 mm), but far from a pure enduro. For moderate obstacle clearing, forest trails, gravel, and broken roads, it is sufficient. To play hero in real technical terrain, you’ll need to look elsewhere. The Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires in 90/90-21 and 150/70-18, mounted on tubeless spoke wheels, confirm the orientation: this bike wants dirt, not a circuit.

The onboard electronics are generous. Four riding modes (Street, Off-road, Rain, and Explorer as an option), a three-level switchable traction control, an ABS also managing the anti-stall, an engine brake control, a cruise control, and a 5-inch TFT screen compatible with smartphones. The Husqvarna Norden 901 specifications are therefore up to market expectations in 2023. Those who wonder if the Husqvarna Norden 901 has cruise control will have their answer: yes, it is there, discreet but functional on long stages.

The 19-liter fuel tank, located low and on either side of the frame, lowers the center of gravity and improves protection from the elements. A detail that counts on long journeys. At €15,349, the Husqvarna Norden 901 price is in the high average of the category, a few hundred euros below a base Africa Twin but without luggage or certain options. The target audience is clearly the experienced rider, comfortable on asphalt as on dirt, who is looking for a bike with character and real versatility, without the aseptic sophistication of the big touring bikes. Not a bike for everyone. A bike for those who know why they choose it.
