Overview
There are colors that simply dress a motorcycle, and others that tell a story. The Aurelius Green Metallic Matt that BMW reserves for the F 900 XR on the French market belongs to the second category. Not a flashy green, not an old-school British Racing green: something denser, darker, evoking the undergrowth of the Black Forest rather than a racing paddock. The same shade had dressed the first seasons of the R 1300 GS before landing here, on this 895 cc crossover tourer that has been trying since its debut to step out of the S 1000 XR's shadow.

Because that is indeed the F 900 XR's positioning problem: it operates in the shadow of a far more brilliant big sister. The 270-degree parallel twin produces 105 horsepower at 8,500 rpm and 93.2 Nm at 6,750 rpm, which is respectable in absolute terms, but appears modest against the sharpest competition in the segment. The Yamaha Tracer 9 plays in the same price bracket with a more expressive triple, the Triumph Tiger Sport 800 offers a frankly addictive engine character, and the Ducati Multistrada V2 raises the stakes further in terms of sensations. The BMW responds with careful overall balance: 216 kg fully fueled, an 820 mm seat height that will suit a wide range of rider builds, a 43 mm inverted fork with 170 mm of travel, and radially mounted Brembo calipers biting on two 320 mm front discs. The six-speed gearbox is beyond reproach, and the 15.5-liter tank allows for respectable range between stops. This is a motorcycle built to last and persuade over time, not to impress over a quarter mile.
The Aurelius version is shown with an engine guard and tinted tall screen in the official visuals. Both accessories are optional. It is a detail that matters, because they genuinely change the silhouette of the machine and the enthusiastic buyer could find themselves paying an unanticipated surcharge to end up with the motorcycle they thought they had ordered. As for the advertised price of €13,900, it results from a combination of overlapping promotions that makes direct comparison with the base version rather opaque. BMW is not alone in practicing this kind of price juggling, but it does not simplify the buying decision.

What remains, once the marketing artifice is set aside, is a well-bred crossover tourer, equally at home on main roads and winding back roads, accessible to an intermediate rider without being bland for an experienced one. The mid-size crossover segment is crowded today, with the Ténéré 900, the Stelvio 1000, the Voge 900, and several others. The F 900 XR Aurelius plays the card of visual distinction and Germanic precision where others bet on raw power or exoticism. It is a coherent choice — not revolutionary, but coherent.
