Overview
You remember when Harley-Davidson released the V-Rod? A shock. A Porsche engine, radical lines, one foot in the future while keeping the heel screwed onto a steel footpeg. The VRSCF Muscle of 2014 is the version of that idea after a steroid treatment in a dark room. It’s far from a cruising custom, it borders on a street dragster made legal.

The first thing that strikes you is its attitude. It is squared off, massive, with that 240 rear tire that seems to swallow the road. The intake vents on the tank aren’t just for looks; they scream performance. On the scale, the 307 kilograms all fueled up are felt; it’s a machine that imposes its mark. But this weight is counterbalanced by unprecedented power for the brand at that time: the 123 horsepower at 8000 rpm comes from a 60° V-twin engine that has more in common with a sportbike engine than a traditional V-twin. The torque, for its part, is a real brute, with 114.7 Nm arriving early and sticking you to the seat.
On the road, the paradox is fascinating. The double cradle frame and the 43 mm inverted fork offer a much more serious handling than its brute look suggests. It leans with a certain civility, even if the wide rear tire requires a bit of conviction in tight corners. But where it excels is on straight lines and lightning-fast acceleration. The five-speed gearbox and belt drive send the power with brutal efficiency, propelling this behemoth towards 200 km/h without complex considerations. The braking, with its dual four-piston calipers at the front, is up to the task.
Who is it for? Certainly not a beginner, who would be overwhelmed by its weight and explosive power. It’s the Harley enthusiast’s motorcycle who wants to break away from the cruising trails, or a rider looking for a unique machine, with an exacerbated character. At nearly 18,500 euros new, it positioned itself as an exclusive proposition. Faced with competition like the Japanese muscle cruisers of the time, often lighter and more maneuverable, the V-Rod Muscle played its card on pure identity, the feeling of being at the controls of a mechanical rebellion object.
Ultimately, the V-Rod Muscle 2014 remains a UFO in Harley-Davidson history. It proved that the brand could shake up its codes to create a machine resolutely focused on performance, without denying a raw force aesthetic. It’s a motorcycle that doesn’t go unnoticed, that requires commitment, and that rewards with raw and direct sensations. A bold bet, which makes it an icon for some, and an overly extreme curiosity for others.
