Overview
Imagine a custom that swallowed a Porsche V8 engine. It’s not a figment of the imagination; it’s the raw reality of the 2012 V-Rod Muscle. Here, Harley-Davidson has definitively tossed aside the manual of traditional good taste to forge a machine that looks like a weapon, a declaration of war on two wheels. It no longer resembles the relaxed cruiser, with its bulky appearance, squared-off lines, and that imposing 240 mm wide rear tire that seems to want to flatten the asphalt. The massive intake vents on the tank aren't just for show; they announce the color: this motorcycle is a violent breath of fresh air for the brand.

The heart of the beast is this revolutionary engine for Milwaukee. A 60° V-twin, water-cooled, developed with Porsche, delivering 123 horsepower at 8,000 rpm. Figures that made the purists grind their teeth at the time, but that propel the V-Rod into another dimension. Torque, for its part, is a real 112.8 Nm compressor, available from mid-range speeds. On the road, this gives a motorcycle that literally explodes through traffic lights, with a fury that air-cooled Big Twins can’t even approach. The five-speed gearbox and belt drive channel this power with deceptive smoothness, masking a latent ferocity.
But all this comes at a price, and not just the €18,790 price tag. With a weight of 307 kg when fully fueled, the Muscle is not a dancer. In the city, it becomes a test of strength, its limited turning radius and imposing weight demanding constant attention. On a winding road, you have to fight against its inertia, even though the inverted fork and dual 300 mm front disc brakes offer capabilities far superior to those of a Softail. It’s a straight-line motorcycle, a spectacle, a pose as well. Its 18.9-liter tank is quickly depleted by its appetite, and the 640 mm seat, although low, becomes uncomfortable beyond a hundred kilometers.
Faced with the competition, it occupies a unique niche. A Yamaha V-Max of the era is an even wilder brute, faster and more technical. A Ducati Diavel, arriving shortly before, is more agile, more refined, and more versatile. The V-Rod Muscle, on the other hand, remains fundamentally a Harley, but a Harley unleashed. It is for the rider who wants the look and aura of the brand, but who refuses to settle for the performances of yesteryear. It’s the custom for those who assume they want to impress, to feel that brutal surge in their back, and to ride a unique piece, far from the beaten paths of mass production. A fascinating, imperfect, but terribly charismatic UFO.
