Overview
When Bologna decides to completely redesign its iconic naked bike, the result is swift. The 2014 overhaul laid the groundwork for a machine that would carry the Ducati Monster 1200 S name for several consecutive model years, from 2015 to later versions like the Ducati Monster 1200 S 2019 and the Ducati Monster 1200 S 2021, each year refining a character that was already well-tempered. At €15,990, the entry ticket is serious, but it buys something rare: a roadster with a generous displacement that isn't ashamed of its sporty origins.

The heart of the matter is this 1,198 cc V-twin engine that produces 145 horsepower at 8,750 rpm and 124.5 Nm of torque at 7,250 rpm. Ten horsepower more than the standard version, achieved without magic but with a recalibrated engine management system. This difference has existed since the Ducati Monster 1200 S 2014, and it fully justifies the "S" moniker. To put it in context, the KTM 1290 Super Duke R of the same era offered more raw power, but the Monster S responded with an irreplaceable V-twin character, that characteristic engine sound and the smooth power delivery that Japanese four-cylinder engines simply cannot reproduce. Facing an Aprilia Tuono or a BMW S 1000 R, the Ducati plays a different score, more visceral, less clinical.
What truly distinguishes the Ducati Monster 1200 S 2015 is the quality of its technical platform. The steel trellis frame, anchored directly to the engine’s cylinder heads, adopts a philosophy inherited from the 1199 Panigale and offers significantly greater torsional rigidity than older Monster bikes with a traditional frame. The fully adjustable 43 mm inverted fork, the progressive-rate single shock absorber also adjustable in all axes, the floating 330 mm discs bitten by radially mounted four-piston Brembo calipers: none of this is cosmetic. It’s racetrack mechanics grafted onto a road bike, with Bosch three-level ABS to manage excesses. The Ducati Monster 1200 S specifications speak for themselves: 182 kg dry weight and 209 kg in running order for a seat height of 785 mm; the whole remains accessible despite the announced power.
The onboard electronics deserve attention. Three riding modes manage power, throttle sensitivity, and traction control intensity independently. Urban mode limits power to 100 horsepower with cautious management, ideal for daily commutes without fighting the machine. In Touring mode, the 145 horsepower are available with a still-present DTC. In Sport mode, the restrictions are released, the DTC recedes, and the Monster shows why some Ducati Monster 1200 S Termignoni enthusiasts seek to further liberate the sound and power of the whole. The TFT dashboard, the wheels based on those of the Panigale S with a Y-spoke design, the red stitching on the seat: these are details that confirm that Ducati has not skimped on the finish of its high-end version.

Who is this machine for? Certainly not a beginner, despite the generous riding aids. The ideal profile is that of an experienced rider who wants a daily ride with character, capable of performing on a circuit without being out of place. The market for used Ducati Monster 1200 S remains active precisely because buyers who have taken the plunge rarely regret their choice. The major overhaul at 30,000 kilometers reduces the cost of use, a significant argument for an Italian of this level. The only real drawback is the initial price, noticeably higher than that of Japanese or Austrian competitors with similar performance on paper. But only on paper.
