Overview

Forget the Thruxton, it went out with a flourish. But in the Triumph spirit, the void left by a high-end café racer needed to be filled, and quickly. So we took a Speed Twin 1200 RS, gave the tank a vintage-style makeover, and here is the Café Racer Edition. A limited series of 800 units, with only 65 arriving in France, at a price that flirts with 18,000 euros. Is it worth the money, or is it just a cosmetic upgrade for a nostalgic rider?

Triumph Speed Twin 1200 Café Racer Edition

Let's be honest, the work is seductive. The British green paired with aluminum gray, accented with gold fillets, imposes a style that is both refined and distinguished. The clip-on handlebars, the Monza fuel cap, and the end-of-handlebar machined mirrors send a clear message: here, we lean. The embossed pattern solo seat and the removal of the passenger footrests confirm this solitary vocation. It’s beautiful work, even if one might regret the absence of a machined fork top yoke to perfect the premium feel, or the choice of cast wheels rather than spoked wheels, which would have completed the retro attitude.

But beneath this beautiful exterior lies a familiar engine: the large 1200 cm3 twin cylinder, angled at 270°, which delivers its 105 horsepower and 112 Nm of torque with the generosity of a luxury tractor. This engine is a marvel of accessibility and character, as comfortable in tight corners as it is pulling out of hairpins. It is supported by a serious chassis, borrowed from the RS: Marzocchi inverted fork, adjustable Öhlins shock absorbers, and Brembo Stylema radial-mounted calipers that bite without discussion. The electronic equipment, with its riding modes, Cornering ABS, and traction control, is there to temper the ardor.

Yet, when in the saddle, a mixed feeling emerges. The position, although sporty, does not have the radical commitment of the old Thruxton. And the digital combined instrument, although practical with its connectivity and navigation, is a departure from the purely analog atmosphere one might expect. This is the paradox of this Café Racer Edition: it plays the retro aesthetic card, but readily adopts modern technologies. It is not a replica, but a contemporary interpretation.

Triumph Speed Twin 1200 Café Racer Edition

So, who is it for? Certainly not for the purist who is looking for an exact replica of the café racers of the sixties. On the other hand, it appeals to the rider who wants a machine with a unique look, equipped with a lively engine and high-end equipment, without sacrificing the comfort and everyday electronics. It is a desirable object, a collector's motorcycle that is also ridden. At this price, and in such a limited series, it is not a rational purchase, but an assumed crush. Triumph is not selling a simple motorcycle, but a certificate of authenticity for a very closed club.
