Overview
When Ducati decides to muscle up its legend, it doesn’t do things by halves. The redesign of the Monster for 2014 marks a clear break with previous generations: the air-cooled engine is gone, welcome to the 1198 cc liquid-cooled V-twin, directly from the Testastretta 11° lineage. This engine is the heart of a machine that proudly claims 145 horsepower at 8750 rpm in its S trim, ten more than the base version. For the Ducati Monster 1200 S, this isn't just a facelift, it's a complete reconstruction of identity.

What distinguishes the S version goes beyond those ten extra horsepower. The steel trellis frame, anchored directly to the cylinder heads like on the 1199 Panigale, offers torsional rigidity unmatched by previous Monsters. The fully adjustable 43 mm inverted fork and the progressive-link mono-shock complete a cycle section designed for committed riding. The braking system moves up a category with 330 mm floating discs gripped by radial four-piston calipers, coupled with a Bosch three-level ABS. On this point, the Ducati Monster 1200 S 2014 technical specifications confirm it without ambiguity: it borrows its references from the track, not from family touring.
The 118 Nm of torque available at 7250 rpm and the 209 kg when fully fueled position this machine in a very specific niche. Not a naked bike for beginners looking to have their mistakes forgiven, rather a tool for experienced riders who know what they’re doing with 145 horsepower and a seat height of 785 mm. The three riding modes, Urban, Touring, and Sport, allow modulation of the electronic throttle response and traction control intervention according to mood or conditions. In Sport mode, throttle sensitivity is maximum and DTC fades away to let the rider master the controls. This is consistent with the positioning, even if the 106 horsepower restriction imposed in the French version tempers the initial enthusiasm a little.
Facing an Aprilia Tuono V4 R or a BMW S 5000 R of the same era, the Ducati Monster 1200 S has nothing to be ashamed of in terms of pure horsepower. It mainly differs by this inimitable V2 character, this mechanical pulsation that gives accelerations a texture that a smooth Japanese four-cylinder cannot reproduce. The 13.5-liter tank limits autonomy a little, especially in sporty use, and long-distance enthusiasts will prefer to look elsewhere. But for those looking for a high-character Italian naked, with the option of acoustic modifications via a Ducati Monster 1200 S Termignoni exhaust for example, the proposition is consistent.

At 15,990 euros at launch, the S justifies its premium over the standard version with its Panigale S-inspired triple-Y rims, red stitching on the height-adjustable seat, its TFT dashboard, and black-clad silencers. The maintenance interval extended to 30,000 km is a real argument on the total cost of ownership, especially for those checking a Ducati Monster 1200 S used and looking to minimize maintenance costs. From the 2014 model year to the Ducati Monster 1200 S 2019 and beyond, the platform has evolved without betraying this initial promise: an adult Monster, tailored for those who have outgrown the aesthetic fascination and want the machine to live up to its visual ambitions.
