Overview
When Munich decides to take on the Japanese titans, it doesn’t do so halfway. The BMW S 1000 RR arrived on the market like a Bavarian uppercut in a championship that Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, and Suzuki believed rightfully belonged to them. An inline four-cylinder engine, an aluminum frame, 193 horsepower at 13,000 rpm for 178 kg dry weight: BMW didn’t need to invent a new recipe, just cook it better than the others. And they succeeded.

This 2014 model year isn’t distinguished by a stylistic revolution. The asymmetrical silhouette, with its instantly recognizable offset headlights, is carried over, virtually unchanged. A slightly thinner rear section, a few grilles on the airbox cover, and subtle fins on the front to better manage airflow. Recent owners breathe a sigh of relief, novelty enthusiasts fidget. But that’s not the essence of it. The BMW S 1000 RR has always bet on efficiency rather than visual spectacle, and that choice remains fully embraced.
What truly changes lies in the details of geometry and electronics, where tenths of a second are won. The wheelbase is reduced to 1,432 mm, the steering rake is revised, and the swingarm is raised by 4 mm at its pivot point. Nothing ostentatious, but the effect on the precision of corner entry is real. The suspension, with an inverted fork at the front and a completely revised combined unit at the rear, displays increased sensitivity. For tight corners, an adjustable steering damper with ten positions complements the whole. It’s the meticulous work of a brand that knows its strengths and exploits them methodically.

The engine, meanwhile, retains its figures. 193 horsepower, 112 Nm of torque at 9,750 rpm, a compression ratio of 13:1 for a short and lively bore of 80 x 49.7 mm. What evolves is the way all this energy is distributed. The engine maps have been reworked, the airbox modified, the intake trumpets changed, and the exhaust system redrawn. Rain mode gains 11 horsepower to reach 163 hp, and the shorter final gearing favors strong acceleration out of corners. The ECU also manages residual torque during deceleration, which noticeably stabilizes behavior during braking. The BMW S 1000 RR engine remains among the absolute references in the category, and these adjustments further refine an already formidable engine.

At 17,343 euros, the S 1000 RR isn’t aimed at novices seeking their A license. It’s a machine for experienced riders, comfortable on the track, capable of exploiting such an electronic arsenal. Facing the Kawasaki ZX-10R, the competition is serious, and choices are often made on riding preferences rather than raw performance. The RR, for those who want to compare generations, has undergone significant evolutions in subsequent model years, from the BMW S 1000 RR 2016 to the BMW S 1000 RR 2020 and beyond. But this 2014 model retains a remarkable consistency: no unnecessary extravagance, a track-focused philosophy embraced right down to the dashboard, which now integrates a lap time indicator accurate to the meter. A fun detail to finish: it remains the only hypersport to offer heated grips as an option. Bavaria oblige.
