Overview
Remember the era when superbikes were admired as much as they were ridden. In 2006, as the world of sport motorcycles began to homogenize, Ducati unleashed a stylistic and mechanical gamble with the 999R Xerox. It wasn’t simply a colored version; it was a statement, an almost faithful replica of the machines entered in the World Superbike Championship. For the amateur rider, it was the rare opportunity to own a piece of the official team without having to wear a branded leather racing suit.

Beneath its bright red livery, bearing the sponsor’s colors, this machine hides an architecture that marked the glory days of the Bolognese brand: a 90° V-twin engine with a displacement of 999 cm3, delivering 149 horsepower at 9750 rpm. Purists will tell you that the figure seems modest compared to the Japanese four-cylinder engines of the time. They are wrong. This is where the magic happens, with a torque of 116.7 Nm available from the middle of the rev range, offering a frank and emotional surge that high-revving engines cannot imitate. The rider is pushed more than he pulls, a unique sensation characteristic of Ducati twins.
But the true treasure of this limited edition lies in its chassis. The tubular trellis frame cradles a fully adjustable 43 mm Öhlins fork, recognizable by its specific black anodized sliders, and a single shock absorber from the same brand. The latter benefits from separate compression adjustment for low and high speeds, a sophistication directly derived from racing. Combined with radial-mount Brembo brakes and a carbon fiber fairing, these elements make this 999R a track bike disguised as a road-legal machine. With a dry weight announced at 181 kg, it displays an aggression and precision that require the rider to commit.
For 32,000 euros at the time, the buyer obtained much more than a livery. He bought an experience. The supplied Termignoni kit further unleashed the raw voice of the twin and its performance. On the track, this machine proves to be a killer, capable of reaching 271 km/h and transforming each corner into an exercise in pure mechanical connection. It’s not easy; it requires anticipation and physical commitment, but it rewards with raw sensations.
The Ducati 999R Xerox is aimed at the demanding collector and seasoned track rider seeking the authenticity of a race machine. It has never sought to be the most versatile or docile. Faced with a Honda CBR1000RR or a Yamaha YZF-R1 of the generation, it appears archaic and demanding. And that is precisely its charm. It is a vestige of an era when character took precedence over aseptic perfection, a motorcycle that reminds you, with every acceleration, that you are riding a piece of Superbike history.
